I'm on the hunt for some recipes that we maybe would've eaten when we were younger. I've tried googling but I thought I'd try here. I'm looking for big hearty meals that will fill you up and keep you warm (things like toad in the hole) and hearty puddings. We've been having jam roly poly and rice pudding. Both really cheap to make and very filling. Any ideas would be great, thank you

Hang on-I've got a hook my mum gave me, which is what she learned to cook from-and so did I minus the offal chapter.... I'll have a look

Off thread but I tried to a make this for a sort of retro dinner and the butcher told me it's incredibly hard to get to get the little hats as they are only made in one factory in France and they don't make many any more. So if you come by them, save them if you can (and if you are planning a retro dinner party!)

Homity Pie?

I believe it was created as a WW2 recipe. It’s delicious. Loads of recipe variations online so pick the one you fancy.

Delta's Cookery Course is your friend. Also, google things and always pick the BBC Good Food version.

Food does't keep you warm, by the way!

I made a bread pudding the other week to use up some stale bread. I had forgotten how nice it is. Mushed the bread up with some milk, added a bit of sugar, mixed fruit, mixed spice and a beaten egg, then threw it in the oven for half an hour or so. Was lovely with some custard.

Ooo some lovely recipes here thank you,
Totally forget about b&b pudding as well, I remember seeing a recipe made with croissants so will try that

From the 1860'S, here's the text of Mrs Beeton's Dictionary of Every-Day Cookery book. Therecipes aren't very detailed but there are nlots of them. It also tells you what's in season for each month.

This is a book my aunt bought me in the 1970s - still have it and it has taught my now grown up kids how to bake.

Crikey this brings back memories my mum had this! I used to make a lovely lemon raspberry sponge pudding from it but lost it years ago.

Highly recommend “Just Like Mother Used to Make” by Tom Norrington-Davies.

Have made loads from it. It’s my go to for tea loaf etc.

Haunt a few charity shops and second hand book shops. That’s often a good place.

I can tell you some from memory. My grandma used to cook these and she was born in the late 1800s.

Home made pie (eg chicken pie). Shortcrust pasty and leftover chicken in a sauce of onion, diced veg, chicken stock, thyme and a good splash cream at the end. Dark meat = gravy type sauces.

Chicken cobbler www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/creamy-chicken-cobbler/

Fish pie (any fish)

A sort of deconstructed cottage pie with chopped potatoes in it rather than on top. Or just do shepherds pie. Or cottage pie (beef not lamb).

We used to have something disgusting called liver and onions but I can't recommend it (Yeuch).

Cornish pasties (and meat, or none)

Lancashire hot pot

Various casseroles with rice, mashed potato or plain. Or roast.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 15/01/2024 15:21

Oh, and cheese pie! Has that at school, mainly.
And kedgeree.

Crazycatstory · 15/01/2024 15:41

Macaroni cheese. It was the only pasta meal I remember having as a child. It was what I asked for if I was poorly and allowed to chose my dinner.

My Nan made an amazing cheese, onion and potato pie. No one ever got the recipe from her 😔

Liver and onions with mash.

Fish pie.

sausage plait.

Beef stew with lots of dumplings.

Shepherd or cottage pie.

A really hearty root veg casserole either as a cobbler, or with a suet crust.

Crumbles, or scones, or Dorset apple cake. Generally things came with a lot of custard!

As well as bread and butter pudding, don’t forget bread pudding.

Older Good Housekkeping cookery books from the 50s and 60s can sometimes be found on eBay.
My late DM had one published in 1949, the year she got married, with black and white photos. She used to make Cornish pasties, fruit cakes, baked egg custard, casseroles, meat pies, stew and dumplings, even spaghetti milanese! (With tomato sauce and breadcrumbed veal slices all from it.
A Lancashire friend gave me the easiest, most comforting recipe ever. He called it 'sleepy pie' and i think it's a version of the Liverpool favourite, scouse or lobscouse. It's simply equal quantities of stewing meat (lamb or beef) potatoes, onions and carrots, all cut quite small, seasoned and cooked together with water or stock until very tender and almost homogenous. Served with pickled red cabbage and HP sauce.

Nat6999 · 17/01/2024 01:39

I've got my mum's Jimmy Young Cookbook, I still use a lot of the recipes, things like Beefies homemade burgers, vanilla cream pie, soups, sides & puddings.
