Best bread for steak sandwich?

Planning on making a steak sandwich later this week and mulling over what bread is best? It needs structure with hold up to the wetness of fillings and bite of the steak, but to much rigidity and all you get is bread or it's too hard to bite through. I'm thinking ciabatta?

Bake at home baguette

Definitely ciabatta.

My back up option is a folded flatbread. The only problem with that is you have to be a little stingy, and/or eat at least two, because of the size.

Ciabatta (RIP the roof of your mouth) or flatbread sounds great!

Ooh I love a steak sandwich! Bake at home ciabatta, med rare steak, fried onions and mushrooms, rocket and garlic and Parmesan mayo…

think that’s Friday nights dinner sorted!

If you’re doing it with fried onions and mushrooms and a nice sauce such as garlic mayo, you want a fresh baguette. Nice crunch and bread absorbs the perfect amount of juiciness.

M and S sourdough baguette - they are frozen and you bake at home for about 6 mins. Delicious.

Ciabatta for sure !

SummaLuvin · 08/01/2024 13:24

thanks everyone, I was considering making my own bread so if anyone has a tried and tested ciabatta recipe feel free to send my way!!!

in case it makes a difference to advice given the 'plan' for the sandwich was seared and sliced medium rare rump steak, caramelised onions, chimmichurri, and rocket. DH will probably have mayo but I can't stand the stuff.

Don't try anything until you've given Lidl's Artisan Baguette a try! I promise, you won't regret it! Like a cross between a baguette and a ciabatta.
You'll be thanking me!

I was also thinking ciabatta, but I'll also throw in focaccia as an alternative. It has more chew than crunch compared with focaccia, and sliced laterally it would be a more favourable filling:bread ratio. Or good sourdough would be delicious with caramelised onions, and should stand up to fillings.

Waitrose baguette. They aren't as hard crusty as others.

Ciabatta, then steak with rocket, horseradish sauce and roasted red peppers - yummmmmm
