Returning frozen food

Today i went to iceland supermarket which i do not normally do but i heard they were doing offers. I got a bit confused about which products were actually in the offers as to me the labeling on the freezers etc was confusing.

Anyway i bought some items and left the shop but then was a bit annoyed as i felt that what i bought was too expensive for what it was. I took the items back and asked for a refund

I got the refund but the cashier said that the policy at Iceland is that they only refund frozen food if its returned within 20minutes of buying it. Is this correct ? i have never heard this before and feel it should be made clearer for people who do not shop there regularly.

Well they won't be able to resell it if it is returned after more than a few minutes so it makes sense. I wouldn't return frozen food unless it was faulty in some way.

confuseeedd · 07/01/2024 18:49

Surely you should look at the products and make this decision about whether it's worth the money before buying and leaving the shop?

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 07/01/2024 18:51

I wouldn't expect any shop to take food back unless it was off!

rollonretirementfgs · 07/01/2024 18:52

Would you be happy buying frozen food that has been sitting in someone's car for more than 20 minutes and then returned and sold to you??

JustFrustrated · 07/01/2024 18:52

The law is strict. Any frozen food can only be out of the freezer for 20 minutes before it is unable to be sold.

I can't believe you took it back tbh.

feathermucker · 07/01/2024 18:52

I've never been confused about the offers at Iceland, shop there all the time. However, surely you check in shop first?

They're lot going to take food back when it's practically past the point of being able to resell unless there's something wrong with it.

feathermucker · 07/01/2024 18:53

*not

It’s been out of the cold chain. Not just the time since you’ve bought it but the unknown time sat in your trolley too. When I worked at waitrose as student 1001 years ago we wouldn’t accept refunds on anything fresh or frozen. The fact that they would have taken it back after 20 minutes is properly dodgy, it could have been in your trolley for an hour for all knew. I suspect that the 20 minutes is supposed to be the time they have to get it from the warehouse chiller to the shop floor one.

Comedycook · 07/01/2024 19:00

Yabu. This seems like a sensible policy.

unbelieveable22 · 07/01/2024 19:01

They shouldn't need to tell you. It's common sense. You are very lucky they accepted it back.
You realised you; had made a mistake having left the shop? Why not ensure you are familiar with prices and offers beforehand. As I said common sense.

Georgyporky · 07/01/2024 19:06

Standard practice in all shops to set a time limit. It's probably a lot less in Summer.

Greenshake · 07/01/2024 19:09

This can’t be real

F1ymetothetoon · 07/01/2024 19:47

Changing your mind and expecting a refund on food items you have purchased with your own free will is really skanky.

Completely agree:I shop in Iceland often and find their offers to usually be really clear

Itslegitimatesalvage · 07/01/2024 20:32

You don’t actually have any legal right to a refund at all. If you buy something in a shop, and not online or over the phone, then you have no legal right to a refund at all. They should have said no. You’re very lucky they did it as that food will now go in the bin.

How on earth did you get confused? You look at the labels, you look at the name of the product you are buying. You check the price.

You’re completely ridiculous and if you thought it was too expensive then you shouldn’t have put it into your basket or you should have said no at the till. I’m actually really annoyed that food is now going to have to be flung in the bin because you couldn’t be bothered to read or engage your brain.

This has got to be a wind up….

I understand why that is the policy, and I get what you are saying.. but what I don't know can't hurt me 🤣

dementedpixie · 07/01/2024 20:38

She shouldn't have refunded you and there wasn't any right to return and get a refund either unless there was something wrong with the food

bathsinkdoorandwindow · 07/01/2024 20:38

@namelessnameface is that not the point? It can hurt you. It could make you quite ill, whether you knew about it in advance or not.

namelessnameface · 07/01/2024 20:39

@bathsinkdoorandwindow well yes but I wouldn't know that was the reason if it happened.
I've left frozen food in the car for at least an hour before putting away before and I'm still here

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 07/01/2024 20:41

It's the same with Asda etc when people dump frozen food at the checkout. It's terrible ppl do this tbh. I was talking to someone working there and it happens all the time. They have to bin it. I also can't believe you left the shop then returned it. I've felt like you but would never return food unless it was off

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/01/2024 20:44

You were lucky they took it back. Your job to check prices and its nuts to take it back unless it’s off, packaging damaged or something.
