Most disappointing food you’ve had (Stanley I’m looking at you).

Stanley Tuccis sandwich.

if looked so delicious on Instagram.

In actuality it was horrible. Prosciutto is like raw bacon. Mozzarella didn’t melt. Olive oil is tasteless grease. I like pesto with spaghetti but not, as it turns out, in a sandwich.

i was so looking forward to it. Went shopping on the way home specially 😕

What food have you had that did t live up to expectation?

Birria tacos. They were alright but didn't taste how I thought they would which is why they were a disappointment.

I don’t paint actually. Unless you meant “palate” in which case it sounds like you have an unrefined vocabulary.

 touché @FancyJapflack

Smoked salmon is regularly very disappointing. I've tried expensive stuff and cheap stuff and frankly it's all really oily and then repeats on me. I'd love to love it but no.

Ooh see I like smoked salmon. It does repeat a bit though.

Do you really hate it enough to warrant 2 threads?

TBH is sounds like you didn't make it properly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with those ingredients.

Wildcrystalchase · 03/01/2024 15:58

I know this isn't the point of the thread, but are there lots of people in the UK who don't regularly eat olive oil and/or prosciutto? I'm from southern Europe and probably eat olive oil daily and prosciutto weekly (even living in the UK). I obviously know it's not a staple here in the same way it is back home, but it's interesting to hear that some posters aren't accustomed to having them at all.

Xiaoxiong · 03/01/2024 16:00

Oh so many things! I think if you are a good home cook, you often eat out and think...I could have made this better at home.

Disappointing:
Agree on cronuts
Some place in Washington DC with cupcakes that were piled high with frosting and the cupcake was dry - the line was around the block
The strawberries and chocolate at borough market - out of season, cotton wool strawbs with greasy chocolate for £££
A ramen place that was so over the top rich I couldn't finish the bowl
Anything with truffle oil that isn't the simplest pasta
Anything with caviar that isn't blini

One of the best comebacks I’ve read on MN. Bravo.

I don’t agree with your taste in food, but this was a marvellous come back! 😂

shearwater2 · 03/01/2024 16:06

Olive oil is only tasteless grease if you buy shit olive oil. You don't have to spend £££ but just get a good extra virgin.

Prosciutto is nice but there are better cured hams (personally I like it a bit thicker sliced and more salty) and all prosciutto is not the same either. Personally I'd prefer cooked streaky bacon on a sandwich.

I wouldn't be sure about a spaghetti sandwich anyway, it doesn't appeal to me, though I love spaghetti.

I'd prefer a chip butty though if we're doing double carbs.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/01/2024 16:06

I looked up that sandwich and I must say it looks amazing.

I've been disappointed by many American foods that I read about in books - everything from Oreos to chowder to Twinkies to biscuits and gravy. None of it was much good Sad

I love that the other thread on this is all about men leaving their wives when they’re dying and this one is salty replies from OP Grin

THIS. There is so much mid-range mediocre food. I try not to order things I would make at home.

😵‍💫 obviously. Masses of people. Not me, but I have the capacity to understand that many millions of people don’t eat prosciutto and olive oil regularly.

I don’t eat prosciutto because I don’t eat pork but they sell it in all the supermarkets, it’s not a particularly niche food. Olive oil is also standard - all supermarkets sell olive, rapeseed and sunflower oils and then some sell other more niche ones like sesame, avocado etc. I probably eat olive oil a few times a week but not quite daily, sometimes I use avocado oil or don’t use oil.

Raw-cured ham isn't a traditional thing in the UK, as far as I know. Although prosciutto and Serrano ham etc are popular now, quite a lot of people (like the OP) probably still don't like the texture/taste compared with baked/roasted/boiled ham. Olive oil is popular for cooking, but not everybody likes it neat for dipping or drizzling on things. EVOO may be a bit strong-tasting for some.

Wildcrystalchase · 03/01/2024 16:14

@BingoMarieHeeler ok lol - definitely hasn't been the case with my friends/flatmates/partners over the last 10 years here, hence the question!

Wildcrystalchase · 03/01/2024 16:14

@AllProperTeaIsTheft thank you for the explanation!

This was my first thought — poor quality bread, olive oil, meat or mozzarella and that will just be a bland grease fest.

What bread did you use, OP?

shearwater2 · 03/01/2024 16:15

I think the instructions are wrong for the ST sandwich I saw. It was clearly a fried cheese sandwich (with other bits) and the recipe said to "warm" the sandwich in a pan. You need to fry it a bit in the oil/butter.

I do like ham, grated gruyere and butter on a really fresh mini baguette.

And also Pret jambon beurre with one of their soups is my standard work lunch. It's just butter, ham and cornichons on a crusty roll.

Forgottenmyphone · 03/01/2024 14:48

A cronut (cross between a croissant and a doughnut).

Oh yes. I had to throw it away. Disgusting bland, dry, sugary mess. Not sure why I thought it would taste okay. It was from an excellent baker and looked pretty and I was starving. I felt grumpy after two bites and gave it to the pigeons.

TryThisItHelps · 03/01/2024 16:18

Probably. I couldn't find ciabatta in Sainsbury's the other day but I did find something described as a bread roll which looked suspiciously like ciabatta. There is a depressing tendency to Anglicise/Britify? everything post-Brexit as if it's the 1950s and we can't be eating "foreign muck" now.

Magnolias Bakery cupcakes in New York. I queued, I got excited and they were just a bit meh
