Gadget for chopping /shredding vegetables (especially cabbage!)

I have quite a small cramped kitchen so I need something small. I think ideally something hand-powered that can be taken apart and rinsed/put in dishwasher, so its put away fully clean.

I make a lot of coleslaw and grating is messy and the bits are too small. I suppose I could get a coarser grater but I do like the idea of confining the bits.

So hit me with your gadgets 😁

My SIL has form for chopping her fingers whenever she tries to prep food. We buy her a cheap kitchen prep item just for a laugh every Christmas. Most have been fails.

This year her daughter found a vertical mandoline by Cook's Essentials from QVC. Item number 818808 £10.50 on sale plus P&P.

She's used it, loved it and hasn't needed plasters. Now we all want one!

I think I need that one 😂

I've ordered it.

No one trusts me after I was finely dicing onions one day and diced a tiny bit of thumb into the mix.

Not sure if I should admit that it went into the pot!

@agent765 😂😂😂😂😂 I'm sure my family have eaten parts of me over the years 😂😂😂

If you do get a mandolin please please watch your fingers. I was stupid and sliced the top of two fingers off! Then realised it came with a hand guard! Great gadget just needed to read instructions first 😂

A gadget-mad friend of ours sliced the top of his finger with a mandolin. We arrrived to stay - found them gone (to hospital) and blood all over the kitchen floor!
Next day, dh dropped the wretched thing in the bin.

Personally I find a good, serrated knife best for slicing/chopping veg - I do slice and chop a lot. But it’s hard to find one that cuts absolutely straight. Dh ordered an expensive American one recently, to replace an old one, and the sodding thing doesn’t cut straight!

I pray that my brilliant ancient one won’t die on me.

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER yes there was alot of blood with me too! I wont use the mandolin part anymore. I wanted thin slices as I was dehydrating fruit 😂 I do like my gadgets but won't bother with that one. 😁

All these gory posts are confirming to me I have made the correct gadget choice. I'm already perfectly capable of regular cuts and burns to my fingers necessitating far too much unhygienic plaster-wearing, to need any help from a mandolin

<watch me as I draw blood rinsing my new gadget under the tap...>

Ha ha good choice. I'm the same! So I was daft to even think about the mandolin 😂

Recommended by Rev Richard coles from Nigella. I bought one and now bought one for all my family! Brilliant gadget
Zyliss E910015 Easy Pull Food Processor, 75cl Capacity, Plastic/Stainless Steel, White/Red, Manual Handheld Food Chopper/Slicer/Blender with Pull Cord, Dishwasher Safe https://amzn.eu/d/07ycnkQ

From the videos that seems to chop rather than shred or slice/grate?

soupfiend · 02/01/2024 19:18

I think Im going to order that Kenwood one

candycane222 · 08/01/2024 19:24

It's arrived! Very pleased with the results. Not very big which is ideal for me - just makes a couple of portions at a time.

Is that red cabbage in there? What have you done with the rest of it, I chopped one up the other day, well I thought I had chopped up the whole thing, the bowl and then the pan wasnt even big enough, then looked behind me and Id only used half of it!!!

How do you ever get rid of this stuff!!

My Kenwood came, Im really impressed

candycane222 · 09/01/2024 11:15

Hehe that cabbage is from before Christmas! Luckily it lasts very well in the fridge.
