Any ideas for upping fruit intake in winter?

Spring to Autumn I eat lots of fruit. On breakfast, apple with lunch then maybe grapes in yoghurt if I want a pudding later.

But I really struggle when it's cold, I can't bear biting into cold food. Breakfast is fine as I'll have banana and tinned fruit or grapes in porridge, but that's it for the day!

Short of making crumbles all the time, how do you enjoy fruit in a non-freezing way in winter?

Tinned plums - warm them in the microwave then eat with yoghurt, porridge or granola.

Frozen berries made into smoothies

Stewed apples are lovely and you can have them with muesli or granola or as a side with pork based mains.

I'm the same op! The thought of crunching into an apple on a cold day is so unappealing to me.

I am fine with bananas and oranges though and anything stewed / cooked. I heat up frozen berries and have them with yoghurt or cream

Add apple to a tray of roast veg
Add fresh orange to a jambalaya or fajitas
Bake a fish with some ripe plums, yum
Mango sticky rice
Microwave a peeled banana with brown sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top (plus dash of rum for adults)
Grilled pineapple - either on a skewer with chicken/prawn or on its own

Mumoftwo1312 · 29/12/2023 14:24

Sprinkle pomegranate onto rice
Berries in porridge and/or rice pudding
Squeeze lemon or lime onto literally any savoury food - yum!
Drink fresh lemon and honey (again with brandy/rum for adults at bedtime)

Poached pears in red wine and cinnamon. I make them in the slow cooker.

Bananas baked with rum and nuts.

Any fruit in a ramekin topped with meringue (raw meringue mix in top, bake until ready).

I think your breakfast sounds fine - I do similar . With that I’m not sure you need to really have that much more fruit during the day .

Will sound silly ,but I chop fruit like apples up rather than biting in to a whole one - feels less cold to me .

Not sure if anyone else has suggested it - but you could core an apple stuff it with raisins and dried fruit and bake it - very easy

Winter fruit salad, any combination of poached pears, apples, dried figs, blackberries, plums, dates, dried apricots, keeps for a few days in the fridge. Warm up a bowl in the microwave for a quick pudding.

Bake apples in the microwave.

Poached pears in red wine or fruit juice.

Hawaiian Toast for lunch, a taste experience not to be missed!

Oh wow, love some of these ideas. Lots of really simple ones too. I have kept thinking of fruit as a separate cold item but adding it into dinners would help a lot!
Never thought of adding fruit with fish so I'll try that. I guess also things like apricots into a Middle Eastern one-pot meal, and mango into curry.

Thanks all.

Don’t keep your fruit in the fridge.

Yes I do that too! But I can't even bring myself to eat the small chunks at the moment.
You are right, I don't need a lot more but it would be nice to have something later in the day, so I think stewing a mixture to reheat from the fridge would be a good idea too.

Warm fruit is more appealing than cold in winter. I grow a lot of soft fruit and rhubarb and freeze it. I cook a batch every few days and keep in the fridge. Any fruit that's a bit past it's best gets chopped and thrown in, a bit like you would with veg in soup. I give it a zap in the microwave to warm slightly and eat with yoghurt or add to oats for breakfast.

BertieBotts · 29/12/2023 14:45

Frozen berries thawed in the microwave are lovely added to yoghurt, especially if they are sour enough to add a spoonful of brown sugar - it's almost like a mini eton mess :D

Baked cooking apples are a lovely dessert too. And I like all kinds of tinned fruit - especially mandarins or peaches.

Apple cake. Banana bread. Good ways to use up fruit that is past its best.

Also dried fruits are good - dried apricots, prunes, banana chips (though I don't love these) - dried mango is fairly easily found now and is nice. Raisins/sultanas/cranberries, mixed with nuts make a nice wintery snack.

Bananas and custard

Bananas and custard

This one is the best idea.

ToriTheStoryteller · 29/12/2023 15:52

I love bananas and custard!

Mmm apple cake too is a great idea as it's apples I'm avoiding completely. Something about their hard crunchy coldness at this time of year. I love an apple cake though, this is my fave.
