Has salting sweet things got completely out of hand?

I really don't like salted caramel/chocolate but it used to be a bit of a niche taste so desserts were mostly unsalted. Admittedly I don't buy desserts very often but when I went looking for a dessert for Christmas day I kept picking up interesting looking ones only for it to have 'a touch of sea salt' or a 'salted caramel centre/sauce'. Does everyone else like salty sweet except me?

Also, don't even get me started on fruity desserts (not citrusy) having cinnamon added.

We will be having a lemon meringue roulade for dessert, but I really wanted a sticky toffee pudding.

(Waits for a pile on to tell me I should make my own from scratch. Grin)

I HATE salt, never add it to anything. Salted caramel, just WHY? What a damn waste!!!

NoTeaNoShade · 24/12/2023 19:38

Can't bear this fad, yuck.

Cheeesus · 24/12/2023 19:39

There has always been a touch of salt in many cakes/etc though.

Also in high end chocolate. It makes all the difference

RedVanYellowVan · 24/12/2023 19:43

Salted caramel is the worst flavour on the planet. I saw some salted caramel gelato the other day and just felt slightly sick at the thought of somebody actually eating it.

I'm quite ready for all the salted caramel lovers to hate me 😂

PlantsFallLikeDominoes · 24/12/2023 19:45

I love it sorry OP.

I don't know why you couldn't get a standard sticky toffee pud though!

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 24/12/2023 19:45

Agree it's gone too far.

I love it sorry OP.

I couldn't find a standard one, there wasn't a huge choice there was the own brand 'luxury' one or a branded one (that I didn't recognise the brand) and they were both salted. Plus it was quite late, I was tired and I just wanted to get out of the supermarket with a dessert and not have to go somewhere else to find something.

I know that a bit of salt is often added to sweet things, when I bake I use salted butter, but there is a difference between that and salt as a flavour.

I 100% agree. I do like salted caramel but I Siri really like standard unsalted caramel and it’s impossible to find.

Floopani · 24/12/2023 19:58

I love salt. I'm partial to a bit of maple syrup and bacon. But I can't stand salted caramel because it's never salty enough.

KirstenBlest · 24/12/2023 19:59

Salt ruins sweet things. Cinnamon can FOTTFSOF, as can vanilla.

ErrolTheRednosedDragon · 24/12/2023 20:10

Yes, it's definitely been overdone. Salt definitely shouldn't be a dominant flavour in caramel or chocolate. If you want something salty and caramelised, then cook a gammon with a sweet glaze and scrape the tin... a little bit of that is delicious. But nothing more in actual sweet dishes than you describe.

EmpressSoleil · 24/12/2023 20:13

Me and DD were in waitrose. Saw some lovely looking Christmas deserts. 80% of them were bloody salted caramel! I hate it and DD didn't really fancy the only 2 that weren't so we didn't bother. So yes I agree with you.

Aydel · 24/12/2023 20:14

Cadbury’s chocolate has always had salt added to it.

blackpanth · 24/12/2023 20:17

I love it

AtillaTheHon · 24/12/2023 20:20

When I was growing up we always used salted butter to make cakes, so I think I'm just used to there being a bit of salt in sweet things. I don't love salted caramel tbf. But I really dislike cakes made with unsalted butter, although I know that's how you're meant to make them! I find them horribly sweet

MintJulia · 24/12/2023 20:21

I really dislike salted caramel or similar . I don't get why anyone would want to ruin decent food, but if they do, that's up to them. It's a free country.

I've only had one salted caramel present so far. I smiled, said thank you and binned it. Yukk, Horrible. 😩

Baldieheid · 24/12/2023 20:21

I'm with you. Salted caramel is not a selling point to me. The idea of a salted sticky toffee pudding is really revolting.

ChateauDuMont · 24/12/2023 20:23

I like salt but salted caramel is revolting.

KirstenBlest · 25/12/2023 10:59

We are encouraged to eat less salt yet they put it in sweet things.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 25/12/2023 19:36

As we ate our dessert today we agreed that a) sticky toffee pudding would have been delicious and b) salted caramel is downright evil. However, someone must be buying it, otherwise it wouldn't still be on the shelves. Or, perhaps, hardly anyone is buying it and that's why it's the only thing left on the shelves.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the "they" who say not to eat too much salt are not the same people who are trying to sell sticky toffee puddings

WotNoUserName · 25/12/2023 20:13

Salt is for chips not for caramel.

But. Salted caramel is better than no caramel.

KirstenBlest · 25/12/2023 20:42

@AtillaTheHon , probably. I eat what I like. I hardly eat salty or sweet food but when I do I do it big time.

Salt is for chips not for caramel. Hear, hear!
