Turkey - safe or not?

Got a turkey from m and s yesterday and it was puffed up with air. I asked if this was normal and the very stressed woman said yes - but it is bothering me.

What would you do?

It doesn't look slimy or brown!

I can't work out what is puffed up? The packaging or the skin. If the packaging its probably fine and meant to be like that.if the skin, and I don't think it is fro the picture that is really odd.

Open it and see what it smells like!

It's the packaging that is puffed up - google tells me both yes and no to eating.
Don't want to open until tomorrow (I have an alternative and lots of ham/stuffing/sausages etc). Just wondering if anyone knew!

Just open it and smell it. You can wrap back up with cling film.

If it's puffed up because it's off then you really are best off finding out now and not risking it going pop and exploding decomposing turkey inside your fridge!

(it's probably not off, but I would check now)

Opening it is probably your best bet then. Having a proper look.
It will be fine open,my turkey is currently in a bucket of brine in the garden.

momager1 · 24/12/2023 16:57

honestly , Open the packet. If it smells fine, then I would not worry about opening the day before. Either put it in a bucket and brine. Or put it in the fridge with paper towels on top. Wet skin never crisps well, so time in the fridge with paper towels on top will solve that and you will have lovely crispy skin on your turkey

You need to pop the bag and smell it now

Open it now and smell it, definitely in the past a blown packet like that was a sign of bacteria multiplying and producing gas but now there are some products that have air pumped in to the packaging to keep it fresher, not ordinarly air but a mixture of something or other! Bags of salad are an example of having stuff pumped in.

Opening it now will do no harm and at least you will then know, just cover it again with freezer bag or clingfilm and back into fridge.

Will open when I get home

At first glance I thought you were asking if the country Turkey was safe!
