Has anyone ever been ill from eating green potatoes?

I know green potatoes are said to be poisonous, but I often find the spuds in the veggie basket have gone a bit green and I cook them anyway. We've never been ill from it yet.

Shouldn't I risk it?

It's not the best idea.

But I remember somewhere reading that you'd have to eat a sack full of totally green potatoes for it actually to kill you. SO probably not that bad.

DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My dad nearly ended up in hospital. Terrible stomach cramps, vomiting etc.
Do rice!

BBBee · 15/03/2008 20:17

I do and am not ill.

BBBee · 15/03/2008 20:18

oh god but don;t eat them because I said that - I might be a superhero or something.

onepieceoflollipop · 15/03/2008 20:19

I wouldn't eat a whole green one, but I would cut the green bit off (plus a bit extra) and feed it to me or dh but not the dds. Have never been ill from this, but it is probably minimal risk as I have cut anything visible off them.

taipo · 15/03/2008 20:22

I didn't know they were poisonous.
Probably nearly finished us all off several times over.

PenelopePitstops · 15/03/2008 20:35

oh dear

have eaten them many a time

BroccoliSpears · 15/03/2008 20:39

How green is too green?

ew no they're not ripe.

Bridie3 · 15/03/2008 20:41

No.

Things have to be really bad before we won't eat them. It's why our children rarely have days off school for viruses, they have first rate immune systems (but probably suffer from weird hallucinations caused by jam mould and fizzing yoghurt).

The only time I blanche is when I survey my FIL's fridge of leftover offerings. We're up at Easter and I KNOW there'll be some of the turkey leftover from Christmas. Or some Christmas pudding.

onepieceoflollipop · 15/03/2008 20:44

Bridie fizzy coleslaw is worse than fizzy yogurt.

I wouldn't eat your fil's turkey but the pudding may be ok

Potatoes grow underground, but when exposed to light (sensibly enough) start producing solanine as a deterrent to anything that may be tempted to eat them.

The wikipedia entry for solanine is here

"Commercial varieties of potatoes are screened for solanine levels, and most have a solanine content of less than 0.2 mg/g. However, potatoes that have been exposed to light and started to green can show concentrations of 1 mg/g or more. In these situations a single unpeeled potato can result in a dangerous dose."

Fizzy coleslaw does actually make me feel a little queasy, onepieceoflollipop! You could probably use it to launch rockets.

Stand back when you open the lid Bridie. I speak from experience.

Re the potatoes - sometimes you get a few green crisps in a packet. I admit I usually eat them as you don't get many in a packet anyway, so if you left the green ones there wouldn't be many left.
