Cooking oil (high cholesterol)

Wishimaywishimight · 18/12/2023 16:33

I have 'borderline' cholesterol and DH has high (both recently diagnosed so trying to reduce it with diet exercise).

I am reading up on the best oil to use for cooking (stir fries etc) and am confused! I thought olive / extra virgin olive would be best however my sister says she has heard this is only good when cold i.e. in salad dressing but that it is not good when heated and that rapeseed is best.

Anyone know the answer?

TBF, if you are only using the tiniest drizzle, rather than a tablespoon each time, it won’t make a huge amount of difference difference. However, if you are using oil every night it might be best to find alternative meals -steamed veg with grilled/baked meat instead of stir fries in oil for example.

Fats and oils

We all need some fat in our diets. It’s getting the right balance of the different types of fat that will help keep your heart healthy.

Your sis is right, olive oil isn't good for frying. Try the oil spray (there's a rapeseed one) so it's the minimum amount, and as PP said, look for other ways to cook that don't involve oil.

Thanks @MugsAplentyForMe Definitely not every night but we do eat a lot of fish and roasted veg and tend to drizzle some oil over both before putting them in the oven. Definitely going to do more steaming rather than roasting of veg for starters.

Thank you for that article - it refers specifically to cooking with high temps so really helpful!

@Daisies12 Thanks for that, it makes sense to use a spray I guess - will stick it on the shopping list!
