Baking with oat flour

MIL has gluten intolerance and I was thinking about baking her some Xmas goodies using oat flour instead of normal flour. Does it work OK as a flour replacement? Any tips?

You can buy gluten free flours. Oat flour may not be gluten free.

Can she have oats? My coeliac dc can't, but obviously depends on diagnosis.
Doves gf range is good. I've obviously not used oat flour so can't comment.

Yes she can. She's not coeliac.

I just noticed that we have oat flour in our cupboard and thought I could use it for her.

The only issue with using Oats that don't specify gluten free is that they may have been cross contaminated during the production process. It depends how sensitive she is to gluten

And gf flours are better as a blend of starch and protein. Oat will have a lot of protein. Buy a bag of Doves or whatever and add some oat in if it suits MIL.

Gf flours hydrate differently. Add a little less liquid than specified, see if you want to add more and after that wait about half an hour before baking and decide if you need to add a splash more milk to loosen your batter.

Bake at few degrees lower and it might need a few minutes longer. Especially for the first time, taking it carefully is better than rushing.
