Black tea
pears
walnuts
avocado
pulses
legumes
red gratefruit
oatmeal

increasing fibre, but particularly soluble fibre to decrease bad cholesterol. Did they give you your levels of good cholesterol?

Oh and don’t firget

artichokra and best of all 80% chocolate yummy, but obviously in small portions

artichokes have really high levels of soluble fibre

Porridge is good! Add oat bran as well.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 14/12/2023 08:41

Oh and exercise helps too.

You can add a sprinkling of oats into various savoury dishes to thicken them without it tasting of porridge. I've discovered this year how great it is adding to vegetarian chili, which can sometimes be that bit unsubstantial.

Great ideas! Have 3 months to try and get levels down, total was 7.37. Weird as pretty healthy I thought!

You'd actually be surprised how unfavourable a vegetarian diet can be to cholesterol. The worst things to eat are your refined carbs - bread, rice, pasta, white starches, and processed foods. And vegetarians tend to rely a lot on those types of foods to bulk out meals because protein is either lacking or vegetarian protein sources can be expensive.

I'd focus on high fibre, unprocessed (no fake meats) high protein, high healthy fat meals with lots of fruit and veg. So fill your plate with fruit and veg first, then proteins and high fibre carbs. And exercise too.

I was a vegetarian for 20 years and always had high cholesterol. Mine is just about normal now and I do eat meat, though usually only a few days a week for dinner. It was the pasta and rice and processed foods that made it quite tricky. Generally, blood cholesterol is much more about carbs in your diet than about dietary cholesterol.

thats your total but what is the split? How much is the good cholesterol and how high is the bad?

I had high cholesterol in 2020 just had it rechecked and its now normal phew. I was on a weight gain diet back then too haha.

I cooked only with olive oil, swapped to soft cheeses instead of hard cheese, more fruit/veg. Started adding avocado side salads. All meat alrernatives i picked were more veg, like veg burgers instead of the meat like ones. So just tweaked what i already ate in how i cooked ect. Started using air fryer more too. I dont go out for takeaways much, generally make versions at home.

I quit alcohol and i did smoke back then which i also quit.

So worked on a healthier lifestyle all around and its definitely great when you see the benefits.
