Which is the best Earl Grey tea?

I looked for Earl Grey this morning in the supermarket and the choice was Twinings or own brand, and I know my visitor dislikes both. So she can enjoy her morning brew, which brand makes the nicest? Leaves or bags?

Mortier or if you want one you can get in the supermarket Teapigs or Clipper organic.

I don't like the Teapigs one. The Sainsbury's decaf one is my favourite (bags), followed by Fortnums smoked (bags) as a treat when I go to London.

I don’t like tea pigs or twinnings either, and never had a decent own-brand. My favourite is by Williamson Tea. I’ve only seen it in Waitrose though.

M&S. comes in bags or loose. Both good. I also like Williamsons and buy it online, as we don’t have a Waitrose

Papyrophile · 13/12/2023 17:01

Waitrose I can do.......... I've been reading recommendations and ratings online and I don't really want to spend £4 postage on a £6 purchase.

The Earl pyramid tea bags by Twinings. They taste like Earl Grey used to taste many years ago.

Thank you all; we used to buy Earl Grey DM liked a lot from a local farm shop, but they stopped stocking it.

Earl Grey is so personal. Can you ask which brand they usually buy and order that in, especially as you’re buying it especially for them.

FaintlyMacabre · 13/12/2023 17:08

I like the Waitrose loose leaf but maybe I’m not a true Earl Grey drinker as I mix it 1:2 with Assam for a more subtle Earl grey flavour and more of a kick from the Assam.

Brew Tea Earl Grey is amazing, they're in net bags and just taste so decadent! The bags are just as good as the leaf tea.

Otherwise Cornish Tea do an Earl Grey which is equally lovely and cheaper, I get online direct.

I'm going to fetch her for Christmas next week, so she could bring her preferred version with her, but in case I forget to mention it, it would be good to have some in stock. I like it every now and again, but don't have a strong opinion. But MNers were bound to have thoughts on the subject!

Fortnum & Mason

Lidls own earl grey is my favourite and I was surprised as I'm a tea snob, everything else I like is very very pricey.
I think it's because I don't like the ones that taste orangey or too strong. This one is perfect

Papyrophile · 13/12/2023 17:13

I am now spoiled for choice! I think we've had Brew Tea before, and I can definitely find the Cornish Tea as we're in Cornwall and very interested to read that Lidl's is so good.

I would say Fortnum & Mason loose leaf. Is the absolute best!

I absolutely agree with this, the Brew Tea Company. I personally mix the loose one with Assam or Ceylon/other generic black tea 50/50 but that's what I always do.

If you don't want loose I think big Sainsbury's often have the bags.
