If you’re Muslim

Would you be offended if you were invited to a buffet type party and pork sausages were an option? (along with many other foods)

TIA
I don’t want to offend.

Not offended at all, no. How kind of you to be considerate. If you just use separate bowls/cutlery to handle the sausages that would be lovely of you. Thank you. 😊

Not muslim but have eaten out with many muslim friends and have hosted muslim friends at parties. I’d put labels on the plates. Maybe put vegetarian options on a different table with different serving spoons etc. They may be ok eating other meats, they may prefer to avoid all meat unless it’s certified Halal. You can always give them a quick call and ask these things if you know them well - it can help give you an idea of how much of each food to make/buy.
If they agree to come to your buffet they know there is likely to be some food that isn’t halal. Just make it easy for them to see what is in different dishes.
If you do desserts, avoiding gelatin or only using vegetarian gelatin (like agar agar) if likely to be appreciated. So it you want to make trifle with jelly, buy vegetarian jelly crystals.
Very occasionally I have had friends from muslim cultural backgrounds surprise me by choosing to eat pork products - I didn’t ask if there was any significance to that decision as it seemed rude to ask.

If they're going to be offended then they'd probably not come in the first place.
It's thoughtful of you but I don't think Muslims expect everyone to be ultra sensitive to them.

CurlewKate · 08/12/2023 08:39

I'm not a Muslim- but I do entertain a lot. I always try to arrange things so everyone can eat everything. I like the idea of people not having to think before they eat. So in your case I wouldn't serve pork. But if you do I'm pretty sure nobody would be offended!

RachelGreensHair · 08/12/2023 08:52

As other mentioned keep things separate, ensure there's no cross contamination with serving spoons etc.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 08/12/2023 09:08

Are you serving alcohol?

RampantIvy · 08/12/2023 09:27

You can get chicken sausages that contain no pork. I'm not sure if they are halal though.

BubblePopPop · 08/12/2023 10:17

Not offended in the slightest, but most likely wouldn’t eat the food. Would also be wary in case it had been cooked using the same oven/dishes/utensils. I’d think about that regardless though, even without the sausages.

mindutopia · 08/12/2023 12:44

I'm Jewish, but I think the answer would be similar. It depends on how strict someone is. Some might not attend a party where any alcohol or pork was served. Some might attend, but would give all meat a miss (unsure if halal). Some might eat certain things, but not others. Some Muslims eat pork and drink alcohol and would dig in. I'm Jewish and I personally eat pork. I know some people who have weird rules about eating it outside of the house if someone else is serving it, but not at home. It can be very individual. If you are aiming to invite a particular person/family, I'd ask them about what they can/can't eat instead of trying to guess. It also makes people feel seen and appreciated that you are considering their needs and not just thinking they are a massive PITA.

The other sausage option would be veggie

It wouldn’t be cooked using same utensils as there will also be vegetarians coming

I'm Muslim and I never get offended when pork is served, as long as it is clearly separated from the veggie food and labelled.

I recall being at a friends wedding, and having a plate of "starters", with pigs in blankets and the veggie options all on one plate with everything touching - didn't get offended, just didn't eat the starters. Thought it was very lazy of the caterers to serve like this.

Yes. Very lazy

All the other food being served is vegetarian as any other meat product would also be haram. It was more a concern as to whether pork was offensive

If all the other food is vegetarian why not make the whole buffet vegetarian?

Get some Richmond meat free sausages if you must have sausages.

Because presumably some of the other guests aren't vegetarian or Muslim and would enjoy pork sausages?

RampantIvy · 09/12/2023 08:52

I'm sure they could manage without for one occasion.

CurlewKate · 09/12/2023 09:06

@RampantIvy "If all the other food is vegetarian why not make the whole buffet vegetarian?"

Yes-this is what I do. Be prepared for the "I've never had a meal without mean and I wouldn't come to the event if it was vegetarian" brigade. They are very odd!
