Why do I need a soup maker?

I can't cook and am living on tinned soup for lunch. I like the idea of chunky home made soup, and just shoving it all in a soup maker. Will it benefit me? Will it give me chunky soup?

Saucepan, stock and veg will give you that.

Soozikinzii · 02/12/2023 20:23

Pan and hand blender is the same

Mum2jenny · 02/12/2023 20:24

Waste of money imo. Can do the same with a pot on a hob or a slow cooker

Eatbetterthisweek · 02/12/2023 20:26

I find most soups are better if you cook some of the ingredients in the oven or barbecue first. You get a chargrilled smokey flavour too. Especially bell pepper soup.

heldinadream · 02/12/2023 20:26

Been making soup for fifty years. Never used a soup maker.
Hell, I AM a soup maker!

MerelyPlaying · 02/12/2023 20:28

You don’t need one - a blender and a saucepan will do the job. However, a soup maker is a time-saver - just bung it all in, turn it on and come back when it’s ready.

However you specifically say chunky soup - a soup-maker won’t really help with this. It’ll cook it, but the time-consuming bit of chopping the veg into chunks still has to be done by you.

I absolutely love mine and was just saying the other day I would 100% replace it

yes I know you can replicate it in a pan but really there is something about just putting it all in a pot and leaving it. Not one stir, not one check, not anything other than getting the bowls ready. My one does sauté as well but my friend has one that doesn't and I can't tell the difference!

MadamVastra · 02/12/2023 20:31

Oh mine does chunky!!!

Yep, this.

MintJulia · 02/12/2023 20:32

It's just excess stuff to clutter up your kitchen with.

I home make soup most weeks and all I need is a saucepan, ingredients and a knife.

Eatbetterthisweek · 02/12/2023 20:33

I would get the one that does the sauté if I was going to buy one but for now I use what I have.

I've had a Ninja soup maker for 4 years, it's honestly life changing! It's pricier than Morphy Richards jug type but the blade broke off in the MR one in the soup and luckily I noticed it just before gulping down! Ninja does chunky, smooth, saute, smoothie, sauces, jam... lots of stuff. I use it probs twice a week. Shove anything in and got soup for 5 days of work in freezer.

Totally agree, bought ours at beginning of covid and wouldnt be without it now.

Angrycat2768 · 02/12/2023 20:36

I absolutely love mine. In lockdown I used it every day. Chuck veg in it, a stock cube and water switch it on, soup made. My MIL used to say ' what's the point/ use a saucepan/use a pressure cooker and blender so when it broke I decided not to replace it. I hardly ever made soup again. I've just got a new one. It does do chunky soup but I do smooth more.

headcheffer · 02/12/2023 20:38

I love mine so much, it broke and I missed it so much I replaced it. One piece of equipment vs a pan and spoon and hand blender and it's so fast to clean. Plus nothing splatters about in your kitchen. Chop your ingredients, chuck them in with some stock and 19 mins later a lovely soup with a better level of blend then you can achieve with a stick blender. Brilliant.

The instant pot though... I hate and can't get on with at all. So horses for courses!!

Giraffescarf · 02/12/2023 20:38

You don't need a soup maker and it will end up with your yoghurt maker- gathering dust in a corner cupboard. Just do it in a saucepan like everyone else does.

MaisyMary77 · 02/12/2023 20:42

I bought the Ninja soup maker a couple of weeks ago. It chops, sautés, makes smooth and chunky soup. I love it! Very easy, and I’ve always made my own soups!
It also makes a superb pina colada 😁

MikeRafone · 02/12/2023 20:46

I gave my soup maker to my neighbour, I couldn’t get on with it.

id rather make soup or I just put all ingredients in slow cooker, many soups in slow cooker recipes about & dead easy

goababy · 02/12/2023 20:48

You do not need one, they make worse soup than you can in a pan + hand blender because you're not sautéing the ingredients.

That said, last year I got a new fancy blender which can also make soup. I wouldn't have bought it just for the soup maker but I do find it useful on busy days. Can chop some veg, chuck in stock and have soup in 30 mins. I keep ice cube trays of sautéed onions in the freezer to add, so you still get the flavour.

Mine has a saute function, i always saute the sofrito in it. Lot less time consuming than standing there with a hand blender that sprays the kitchen and chasing the last lump round the pan

Yetmorebeanstocount · 02/12/2023 22:26

I found that the issue was I couldn't taste and test and add bits as I went. If you get the herbs/spices/stock wrong, it ruins the whole batch.

@PTSDBarbiegirl

Could you please link which one has the sauté function? Many thanks ☺️

GoodlifeGlow · 02/12/2023 22:41

I have one and it’s great for getting you in to making soup. But like others have said it doesn’t do anything different from a big pan and a stick blender. I now mostly use a pan as I can make bigger quantities to freeze. Check FB marketplace bet there are lots on there.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/12/2023 04:01

The advantage of a soup maker over a pan and blender, is that the soup maker doesn't need watching, and it turns itself off, so you can put it on and go out to work/shopping/dog walk etc and soup is ready when you get back.

Chouxpastryishard · 03/12/2023 04:41

I have one I’ve used once. The soup was horrible. Could people who live then post recipes please ?
