First world problem - but horrible baked potatoes!

AIBU or do baked potatoes taste of nothing these days? As a child I regarded a jacket potato as a beautiful thing, a real treat.

But I must be going wrong somewhere - even when oven baked until really soft inside and crispy on the outside, the potato in the middle is white and watery and tastes "raw". I've just left another half eaten dinner because of this.

Where am I going wrong?

Milly Molly Mandy
Sweet as Sugar Candy
Pretty Little Eyes of Blue

Maybe use a different variety of potato. Just because it's big doesn't mean it'll bake well.

jings! brought back long forgotten memories of Glynn Poole and Junior Showtime

Oil, salt and pepper on the outside.

Or go extra and make Lid Potatoes à la Milly Molly Mandy. I add cheese and spring onions to mine.

I remember the lid potatoes! Must do that.

Love a jacket potato with garlic butter 😋

DD (age 10) still insists on a Milly Molly Mandy lid potato every time.
The other favourite is Milly Molly Mandy tea- just a modern version of the sort of tea they have in the story where all the friends come round. So cosy. I’ve got chicken shawarma planned for tonight but now I want muffins and cherry cake instead.

Sorry for the derail!

we cook ours for at least 90 minutes anything less and they taste horrible and raw

pastypirate · 02/12/2023 17:28

My potatoes were only so so until I moved to mumsnet method which is 10 mins in the microwave then 30 in the oven brushed with olive oil. I buy cheap potatoes from aldi it makes no difference they are ace

Oblomov23 · 02/12/2023 17:44

I agree. They don't taste like the spud-u-like Wink jacket potatoes of the 1980's!!! I can't get mine to taste good recently.

sixteenfurryfeet · 02/12/2023 17:50

I've found that the potatoes sold in supermarkets specifically as baking potatoes (often the waxy 'Cara') tend to be the wrong variety. They look ideal because they are just the right size and blemish-free, but good jackets they ain't.

That story is why I loved baked potatoes so much! Always mix up the tasty filling!

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/12/2023 11:16

I'm sure it must be something to do with the variety. I actually prefer the potatoes which have a slightly more yellow flesh, not the floury King Edwards and similar which are great for roasting.

When I say tasting "raw" I don't mean that the potatoes are underdone, they are definitely cooked all the way through. They just have that underdone taste about them, I can't describe it but it's not nice.

Try King Edwards. Floury.

This. King Edwards all the way for baked potatoes (& mash).

Pre boil a bit. Drain, then rough the outsides up shake in the colender. Pat dry with paper towel. Sprinkle of salt and into hot oil in the oven.

Spuds are on the turn at the moment.

In the last 6 weeks or so they've gone from lovely and fluffy with crispy skins to wet and mushy with weirdly paper-like and sweet skins. Grim.

I love a JP and can't wait for fluffys back already!!

Anyone potato experts in the house with recommendations for a year round good spud?

This.

Maris Pipers are good for mash at the moment so should be good for baking? Size is not important, nice fluffy middle is

That is a roast potato, not a baked potato.
