I cant chew gum & I can't have artificial sweetners at all

I like Tesco toffees & chocolate limes but I need something to suck as my mouth is so dry

But fruit pastilles and jelly tots make my mouth even more dry

Any suggestions

I'd suggest old fashioned boiled sweets (fruit drops or mints). Not sherbet ones though. Most supermarkets have them in big bags.

Retired dentist here, the problem is with a dry mouth you have much less saliva so any sugar will stick to teeth for much longer as no natural pH balancing or washing so your risk of tooth decay will be 10+ times greater, constant sucking of sweets means pH in mouth is permanently raised leading to even more acidic attack on teeth
sipping water is the best, there are artifical salivas opinions vary on effectiveness but they have no sugar
do you know why you have a dry mouth, multiple medication sjogren's syndrome, radiotherapy to head and or neck?

No menopause or thyroid are possibles, I guess but it's pretty much since I had covid in Oct 21

You can get a lubricating mouth spray, which I’ve found quite effective (my meds were causing the mouth dryness). My dentist advised me to avoid sweets and drink water regularly.

Fruitella or latest craze is sour skittle clouds which really make my mouth water..........I've weirdly had a very dry throat since covid 2020, gets so dry sometines feels like closes up and have a choking/coughing fit and have to suck something🤷‍♀️

KatyMac · 30/11/2023 16:11

That's it exactly @Mossstitch my throat is so dry it closes over, then I choke, then I cough and it sounds awful

Water does nothing

Can you still get travel sweets in the tins? Otherwise how about ice lollies?

That's weird, everybody looks at me in horror at work (hospital) and offer a drink but doesn't help! I'm the same with artificial sweeteners, really upset my stomach.......its a nightmare since sugar tax, they sneak them in everywhere😩@idontlikealdi a lot of those in the tins or little boxes have artificial sweeteners in🙄

A friend saw me cough and was ready to rush me to the gp/a&e as she was convinced I was coughing up my lung!

But all I can do is try and keep my mouth/throat moist; very little works

I like Mint Imperials, or boiled sweets as suggested.

Have you mentioned it to your dentist? I did and was sent for tests at a dental hospital where they "milked" my salivia ducts with their fingers (that was an experience I can tell you) and I had an ultrasound to check if there were any issues to rule out anything serious. I was told to chew gum which does help, no sweets due to the sugar sticking to the teeth.

KatyMac · 30/11/2023 18:13

The dentist said some people were just like that

When my Dad was ill last year, we bought him some mouth spray - biotene and xylimelt tablets. He had a dry mouth from using morphine. You can also get a "saliva" gel on prescription. There's also a toothpaste you can use.

4preciouskidsand2angels · 30/11/2023 20:02

You can get salavix pastles from a pharmacy maybe available online or biotine mouthwash and gel too xx

My aunt likes the sour haribo (sour mix?) for this very reason. All the best OP.

KatyMac · 30/11/2023 20:39

Thanks - Im not a sours fan but I'll steal some from DH to try

The others have sweetener in so I'll have to give them a miss
