Sweet/salty popcorn!

My DSDs absolutely love the sweet and salty popcorn you can get in the Uk (proper corn i think it is? In the yellow bags?) but we've recently moved to France where the only popcorn I can seem to find is the more coated caramel kind.
And kernels!

I know popcorn has got to be theeee easiest thing to cook and I've got no problem popping it so will pick up some kernels but any tips for how I get that lightly salted and lightly sweet topping?
Am planning a Xmas movie night... DH has never seen Elf if you can believe it

As an aside. French crisps are so boring, I miss salt and vinegar 😂

I’ve never managed to make nice sweet popcorn at home, only salted. We’ve tried icing sugar, maple syrup, normal syrup, sugar, no clue what else to suggest.
Proper corn do microwave popcorn, although the sweet isn’t great the salty is good, could someone back home post some microwave packs to try? Asda do them. Or have you tried Amazon? S&S proper corn is available there for delivery in the U.K., maybe you could get a delivery in France for her Christmas stocking?

Put sugar in with the oil when you pop it. Then add a grind of sea salt over it

I make sweet and salty popcorn at home. Pop your kernels, as soon as they are done take the pan lid off as briefly as possible, scatter in salt and sugar, put lid back on and shake the pan really hard for a minute or so.

I also recommend you try Lay's Moutarde Pickles crisps, which are truly a thing of wonder.

For a quick batch we’ll usually add icing sugar to the oil when popping and will add the salt once popped before tipping into a bowl.
When we have more time, we’ll make up a caramel sauce to lightly coat the fresh popcorn in - this is then placed on a lined baking tray in a low heat oven for a few minutes. We sprinkle with sea salt when it comes out of the oven. Can technically keep for a few days but it vanishes quickly!

I am kind of glad they are not too easy to get hold of in the UK as I am totally addicted! My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

Not what you asked but there are plenty of salt and vinegar crisps in my local French supermarket including Lays and Brets.

In Monoprix in their international food section I once got some sweet and salty popcorn that was amazing. It was in a silver bag, and some pieces were salty and others were sweet. Never seen it again unfortunately...
