Hi all, my partner and I have spent 30mins looking online but aren't getting anywhere.
His grandmother used to make this for us but unfortunately, she's not with us anymore so can't ask.

It had pastry at the sides and bottom. Then a layer of jam. Then cake mixture baked inside the pastry case? That's all that's coming to mind at the moment. We always called it German Love Cake but no idea why!

She used to use the Bero recipe book if that's any help...

Please help put us out of misery so I can make it for our DC 🤞

Sounds like a Bakewell tart?

DurhamDurham · 24/11/2023 22:11

Yep sounds just like a Bakewell tart. Delicious with custard.

Mazuslongtoenail · 24/11/2023 22:12

Bakewell tart

Pinkpinkpink15 · 24/11/2023 22:13

Yep almost definitely Bakewell tart

AliMonkey · 24/11/2023 22:14

Maid of Honour?

FrangipaniBlue · 24/11/2023 22:15

Almond and cherry - Bakewell Tart

Strawberry jam and plain sponge - small version are called Maid of Honor Tarts

If neither f those could it have been a Frangipane Tart?

Another vote for Bakewell tart, especially since you mentioned the Bero recipe book, which has a lot of traditional cakes, biscuits etc.
You can still order a copy of the Bero book, if you don't have one.

The bero has/had both Bakewell and maids of honour - the former has almonds and the latter not.

Phonedown · 24/11/2023 22:18

Sounds delish. We used to make a German love cake but it was a sourdough starter cake with apple and carrot grated through it made in a bundt tin. It too was delish.

Love the bero book

'It wasn't a Bakewell Tart because I don't like Bakewell Tarts'. Quotes DH.

But he bloody does like Bakewell Tarts because after having a Google, I'm 99.9% sure that's what it was!

I've never heard of Maid Of Honours! After having a Google, they're definitely getting made too! Thank you all so much! Made my night! Now off to see how I can get myself a Bero book! ☺️☺️☺️

The Bero 'maids of honour' looks like what the OP is after but not quite the traditional tart

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maidsoffhonourtart

(But then again not many Bakewells are either but still tasty)

averylongtimeago · 24/11/2023 22:29

I learnt this from my mil, basically a pastry case, jam in the bottom then filled up with a Victoria sponge mix.

She would always make one with the pastry trimmings after a baking session. The jam was whatever she had open and sometimes she added almond flavor and sometimes not.

If you are being posh, you can add ground almonds instead of flour to make a frangipane tart (Almond tart in Yorkshire).

Mykittensmittens · 24/11/2023 22:32

I would say frangipane if it’s not a bakewell. Sound a lot like it to me.

I've just ordered the Bero book , my Mum had one ( in the late 70s/early 80s) there was a recipe for almond crisp biscuits that were delicious .

EtiennePalmiere · 24/11/2023 22:50

Waitrose's bakewell tart is actually really good

KezzabellaB · 24/11/2023 22:50

My Nana used to make Ground Rice tarts. Exactly as you described but the cake mix was made with ground rice instead of flour. Delicious!;

In defence of your DH I thought I didn’t like Bakewell tarts until I was about 20! I thought they were all like those Mr Kiplings ones which I think are rank, nasty glacé cherry and thick white icing. Then my mum made one after roast and I gave it a try - an entirely different food IMO, delicious.
