is the packets of smash potatoes ok to give to 11 month old babies instead of having to make potatoes as i work in evining so im not in to make her tea so i usually leave a packet of smash to mix in with some veg is this ok or is salt content high

I wouldn't give Smash to a baby, no. Real mash doesn't take long, just cut potatoes into small cubes before cooking them and they really don't take long.

blossomgoodwill · 19/12/2004 22:35

I would say salt content is way to high in smash.

Hulababy · 19/12/2004 22:35

I would have thought the salt content would be wuite high TBH.

Do you have a microwave?

If yes, make your own mash in just a few minutes - just cook a small potato for 7 or 8 minutes in skin, then either use a potato ricer (which gets rid of skin as it miashes) or just cut in half and scoop out middles and mash with fork. Takes 10 minutes to do - so you can do it whilst your veggies are boiling/steaming.

as i have gave her smash a lot have i done any damage if iv been feeding her lots of salt? the packet does not say how much salt is in smash now i feel terrible for feeding her salt how long does it take to boil a potato silly question but i not a good cook

I'm sure she's fine. It takes less than 10 minutes to boil potatoes for mash if you use boilng water from the kettle to put on the potatoes and as long as you've cut them up v small.

Hulababy · 19/12/2004 22:40

To boil very small cubed potatoes will take less than 10 minutes - just boil until soft enough to pierce with fork.

popsycal · 19/12/2004 22:40

does it say how much sodium?

i would just start from tomorrow and look at the tips that people have suggested - dont beat yourself up about it

phatcat · 19/12/2004 22:41

proper mash also freezes well - just put a dollop in a twist of clingfilm - take out of freezer night before you need it, leave in fridge and it will be ready to reheat at tea-time.

FLOPSEYfairylightswithBUNNIES · 19/12/2004 22:43

15 to 20 minutes depending on how small you chop the pieces up. honestly wouldn't worry about salt you may or may not of given dd so far, changing diet from now on will be of benefit. you could see if local library has cook books for babies, there are lots on the market.

wheresmyturkey · 19/12/2004 22:43

If you cut them into small chunks (fine of your mashing them) they take about five to ten mins, add a bit of milk and unsalted butter to make it creamy (dd loves it like like that)
Personally i would avoid microwave for babies food!

FLOPSEYfairylightswithBUNNIES · 19/12/2004 22:45

sweet potatoes cook even quicker, just peel chop and boil in normal way, should cook in 10 mins, can also be froozen, stick some in a freezer bag or leave some in a bowl in fridge to use again tommorrow. your poor dd will be sick of spuds by the time we're finished.

Smash contains way too much salt and other gunk. However Hipp do a packet baby instant mash (I sometimed even use it for us) that has no salt. You can get it in Boots.

youngfifemum · 19/12/2004 23:02

the pack says there is o.3 grams of sodiam per serving is that a lot and is it ok to feed her frozen oven food like fish fingers chicken nuggets etc

Fish fingers are not too bad in moderation. Chicken nuggets I would say no, they are too highly processed and have a lot of salt in which is just not good for babies. I used to make my own nuggets, then freeze them.

One thing I often cook for my 10 month old when I am in a rush is easy fish pie. I buy frozen cod fillets that can be cooked in the microwave in a couple of minutes in a little milk. I then make up some Hipp baby packet mash to top the fish with and serve with frozen veg.

Hipp also do baby microwave meals suitable from 10 months and organix do jars of baby pasta sauce. Neither of these have any added salt.

jinglebelljodee · 19/12/2004 23:18

You can even buy small portions of mash potato in the frozen section of most supermarkets.

Hulababy · 20/12/2004 09:02

You can. We sometimes have the frozen mash in the freezer for emergencies. But DD is older at over 2.5yo, so can have that bit extra salt in food than an 11mo - and we don't cook with any added salt at all.

Mash is DD's favourite to have with those tiny weenie sausages. The sausages defrost in such a short period of time, and the frozen mash you cook from frozen for about 1.5 minutes in mocrowave. When really pushed for time we have that frozen veg in the back - again takes less than 2 minutes. Have to say that I don't use it regularly, but have it in for emergency meals.

Hi, I also make mash in bulk and freeze it in small portions - you could do this once a week at weekends. I also always cook the potatoes in the microwave until soft and just mash the flesh with milk/butter. Sweet potatoes baked in the microwave are good too and babies usually love them - quite sweet. Mashed swede is another good one, either alone or mixed with the potato - again, you can make in bulk and freeze a couple of weeks' worth.
