mash pot with veg sounds fine, more than what my little monkey will eat, dont panic.

popsycal · 19/12/2004 22:33

If you want to cook for her, there are 2 websites I would recommend to get you started.

I am by no means a fantastic cook but found that these pointed me in the right direction....will post them now for you

Peckarollover · 19/12/2004 22:34

Mashed potato is fine but I would worry about it being smash potato - I imagine there may be lots of salt in that? Not sure tho

youngfifemum · 19/12/2004 22:35

that be great popsycal id love some new ideas is the ready made packets of smash potatoes ok to use rather than making potatoes

If you don't want to cook, there are lots of baby foods avalable for that age range with less salt...

for lunch, you could always try some fruit, pears/apples/bananas peeled and cut into chunks, dd is old enough now to feed herself, also toast with marmite, lots of vitamins apparently. raisins are always fun, but you'll be finding them in the furniture/carpet for weeks. try the odd chunk of cheese for calcium. it sounds like your doing fine really.

popsycal · 19/12/2004 22:37

add dirty nappies to where you will find raisins

FLOPSEYfairylightswithBUNNIES · 19/12/2004 22:38

have just spotted that it's smash not mash your feeding dd. not sure of salt content either, but it doesn't take long to cook a spud and mix with a little milk or butter-no salt butter of course.

Hulababy · 19/12/2004 22:38

There are lots of things that you can make in a matter of minutes too - I've had plenty of ideas from Mumsnet!

Eggs - throwugh in lots of veggies to make an omlette

Pasta - just add a drop of olive oil or butter, and a bit of veg or a grating of cheese; my DD alsways prefered it like this than having a sauce on it.

Make proper potato mash in just a few minutes - posted on other thread about that.
I am sure they'll be loads of people here to give you ideas.

Why don't you start cooking fresh meals for the whole family? Much easier than having to plan two meals.

Simple meals such as shepherds pie, chicken stir fry, fish pie, lasagne.

That way you know exactly whats going into your little ones diet. I would keep fish fingers for once a week jobs when you can't be bothered to cook, thats why i do on days when i'm too tired to cook.

If you want any help with recipes, just let me know.

I promise you'll enjoy cooking once you start! when i left home i had never cooked a meal in my life, and i have taught myself from recipe books, and now adore cooking.

Well, chicken stir fry is easy because you can basically chuck anything in and it tastes great (i use up all the soggy veggies from my fridge) Get yourself a cheap wok, heat it hot with oil and chuck in chicken pieces, let them brown and then add any veg you like - mushrooms, broccolli, mini corn on cob, sugar snaps (like mini mange tout but nicer). Add a splash of soy sauce or sesame oil. Then add some noodles ( i buy amoy straight to wok noodles).

You can really experiment with this, you could try chicken, sesame seeds and oil. Or lemon chicken with juice of a lemon, some lemon peel and a mix of cornflour and water.

Lasagne is another goodie. Brown some mince in a pan, chuck in any veggies, and a jar of tomato based sauce (like the pasta sauces). In another saucepan heat a large blob of butter (i'm sorry i never weigh anything so have no idea with weights), say two tblsps butter, then stir in 2tblsp plain flour, keep stirring all time, slowly pour in milk, keep stirring and bring to boil then let simmer for a while for the sauce to thicken. (mine always go lumpy, but keep stirring and they eventually dissove.)

Now in a casserole dish put half the meat mixture. Then lay on top some lasagne pasta sheets, then pour on half the white sauce you made. Repeat. Top with grated cheese and cook in oven for 40 mins.

The good thing about dishes like lasagne, is you could cook them much earlier in the day and then just reheat them for dinnertime.

Casseroles are another easy dish, which again you can chuck anything you like in and experiment.

Happy cooking!
