Do any of the supermarkets do gluten free Christmas food to order?

Waitrose definitely don't and nor do Sainsbury’s. The vegans have a whole bloody range!

I make a lot of stuff myself but it would be so nice to order some fancy party food that I could actually eat.

You mean as a special specific Christmas food order, rather than a normal online shop? I usually get an order from M and S - I haven’t found anything suitable, and even if they did needing vegetarian
and gluten free is usually a nope anyway. M and S usual free from range has a lot of meat products (I’m talking about the mains/sides rather than bread etc). DDs first Christmas of having to be gluten free so we’ve decided we’ll just have to make it all ourselves. Gluten free mushroom wellington, stuffing, yorkies, and a tiramisu 🤷‍♀️

Party food? No - at one point you could, but now its gone over to vegans. M&S do have several party foods that are GF (Asian lollipops, pork belly squares, beef rosti and chicken kievs are the ones I've seen so far).
Morrisons and Asda both have a frozen party food selection thing. I haven't seen anything from the CoOp yet

It's so rubbish! Thanks though :)

Not a supermarket, but Cook do lots of GF Christmas food, including a complete Christmas dinner.

WingingIt101 · 13/11/2023 08:40

I agree!

Dd and I both coeliac and all I want for Christmas is a tray of canapés I can whack in the oven and not think about 🤣

M&S by far the best - they do GF samosas, spring rolls, sausage rolls, pork pies and as pp have said some of their non pastry bits like skewers are "accidentally" gluten free, so you can get a decent spread that way.

We are doing a drinks and nibbles party for some friends on Christmas Eve this year and my aim is to cater it 100% GF so dd and I don't have to think "oh not one of those" or have a separate tray. Some will have to be home made but I'm doing:

M&S bits listed above
Charcuterie board with meats and cheeses
Tesco free from garlic and herb (I think!) crackers
Sweet tray - gf mini cakes / flapjacks / marshmallow snowmen / Tesco free from Christmas trees, Tesco free from Yule log
Crisps and dips

Then I'm getting a few rolls of the ready roll gf puff pastry and making the "twist" christmas tree you see on Instagram - one with a pesto and cream cheese filling and one with Nutella then if I'm feeling up to it I'll get one final roll of the pastry and make little filled canapés like red onion and goat cheese, and then maybe a meat one with some beef - I know you just want easy shove in the oven stuff, I'm totally with you! But Tesco and M&S are your best bet and then the ready roll pastry at least makes for minimal effort for the last couple of bits if you want them!

Are there specific dishes you're looking for - maybe between us we can compile a decent list of suitable options!

I have had to be gluten free for last 12 years and I think in some respects the gluten free range is getting worse, especially frozen as they are mixing it in with plant food ranges. My mil is celiac and keeps picking up the wrong things as the vegan stuff is taking over the gf section.

M+S used to do a lovely apple pie which they have stopped doing and their range is very small now. Not much in the Christmas food order either.

Optimistically looked in Aldi food guide, they did have a gluten free label but not much was actually labelled. Last year they did some lovely Christmas deserts but it doesn't look as if they have them this year.

Don't get me started on the John Lewis cafe that wins the award of the worst gluten free menu I have seen, so don't pop in if you are doing your Christmas shopping!!

I really don't like being gluten free, and the limited food on offer at this time of year so I am watching this threat with interest!!

Sainsburys do gf Xmas pudding and lots of other bit's

GimpMasksAndWagonWheels · 13/11/2023 09:24

Shamelessly hijacking this thread with a related question... what's the nicest supermarket GF Christmas pudding?

Agree on the canapé bits... M&S is by far the best. Co-op have been doing a few bits over the last few years (mmmm their salted caramel profiteroles 😍) but not sure if they're still stocking them.

AllyBugs · 13/11/2023 09:28

Might be worth looking if one of the gluten free blogs has a write up. There's always things popping up that are gluten free but not actually in the free from range, I know a few of the supermarkets now do breaded mozzarella sticks that are gluten free (labelled gluten free but in the regular section)

IHeartKingThistle · 14/11/2023 01:10

Oh these ideas are amazing, thank you!

Wheat free bakery direct do lovely cakes and breads if your looking for that kind of stuff. They deliver. Amazing cakes, their cream doughnuts are yummy.

Spencer0220 · 14/11/2023 01:28

Popping in to bookmark thread. DH and I are both coeliac and sick of struggling to cater get togethers for large groups

SadCelticBunny · 14/11/2023 13:41

Someone upthread said they don't like being gluten intolerant or coeliac and I totally agree.

Someone else said that they are annoyed that the Free From now includes so much vegan items. It is definitely worse than it was.

I am GF and vegetarian/pescatarian (i eat fish occasionally) and it can be a nightmare.

We went to Liverpool last week and had lovely food in Maray, Bouchon and Browns.
However, stopping at an appealing cafe for coffee and cake is usually a no go.
My wife has lots of choices and feels guilty and I have yet another brownie.

Sorry for derailing, I wanted to say that party food is very difficult for me as such a lot, even if GF, have meat or Goat's Cheese, which I can't stand. I don't like vegan cheese either.

You can probably tell I don't eat much party food.😳☺️

nowtygaffer · 14/11/2023 13:53

For Christmas party food I would just get gf mozzarella sticks, filled potato skins, mini sausages, and bit of nice cheese. Not amazing but feels like you are having something nice. I've also just ordered mince pies and Christmas pudding. I get all this from sainsburys. Agree it is rubbish being coeliac and we are definitely getting squeezed out by the vegan ranges!
