Savoury snacks to share at the office - homemade?

MyAnacondaMight · 04/11/2023 10:12

At my office we have a custom of bringing in sweet treats - blondies, cookies etc. - for special occasions. It’s my turn soon, and I’d like to do something savoury instead, but am stuck for ideas.

Snacks need to be single serve, cold/at room temperature, and taste good the next day (I would be baking the day before). I’m a good cook, but draw the line at making my own pastry etc. And. at the risk of being a terrible snob, I’m looking for something a little more sophisticated than sausage rolls.

I was thinking a platter of sushi (bought), but would ideally like to make something at home. Any ideas?

Cheese garlic and caramelised onion muffins. Easy to make and taste gorgeous. I'm always requested to make them go whatever event. I made them yesterday for a cheese and wine party.

Honey & Co feta and spring onion bouikos are amazing! A colleague made them years ago and I had to immediately buy the book. Recipe here rachels-kitchen.com/2014/12/11/feta-and-spring-onion-bouikos/

Or cheese and marmite scones... omg. Soooooo good! www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/cheese-marmite-scones

Was he actually a Labrador? All mine have fricking loved carrots. Current incumbent loves one frozen. As a special treat. Maybe the shop gave your lab grander horizons. My uncle’s lab used to nip next door to the village shop to steal a mars bar or six #missesthepointofthethread #uttershockatafussylabrador

Sorry, previous post meant for @CharlotteStreetW1

to OP, a really good cheese scone is your friend here. Especially if you bring in good butter / a cheese board and thick cut ham.

(Gluten free) onion pakoras.

(Gluten free) Poppadoms.

GF Chutney

Cheese

Mixed Olives

Grapes

Strawberries

GF mini pizza/crostini

GF crackers/breadsticks

Little pots of GF Pasta with cherry tomatoes, olive oil, sea salt, couple of bits of mozzarella and a basil leaf.

Thought I'd possibly try to balance things out from every single thing suggested containing wheat/gluten and therefore excluding anybody with Coeliac Disease by default. As usual.

Sushi sitting out all day? Nope!

Parmesan Shortbread. Nigella.

RinklyRomaine · 04/11/2023 20:49

Savoury muffins. Parmesan with shredded ham and sun dried tomato, feta and tomato with gated courgette, smoked paprika and chorizo with sweet peppers...you can top with a whipped cream cheese or nice tomato sauce or whatever too if you want them to look fancy.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 04/11/2023 20:51

Cheese biscuits or cheese twists

Babysharkdoodoodood · 04/11/2023 20:59

I always do spanakopitas (filo cheesey spinach spirals) and tiropita(filo feta cheese pies)

Family parties, street parties etc. I always get asked for them. Loads of recipes on internet. Easy to make and a crowdpleaser. Not vegan though

pastabest · 04/11/2023 21:02

Cheese and pickled onion/pineapple/cornichons/grapes/ cherry tomoatoes on sticks

Maybe a few with chunks of sausage or little chorizo bites or salami, or prosciutto

Different types of cheese - perhaps a cheddar, a ewes or goat cheese, a blue cheese and a smoked cheese.

It would be like a pre-constructed deli board.

I'd love that!

And you could eat the leftover cheese and bits you didn't use for your tea.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 04/11/2023 21:05

Two ideas for you:

Marmite and cheese fingers - bought puff pastry. Unroll and spread half with marmite. Sprinkle grated strong cheddar over the marmite. Fold the plain half of the pastry over and cut into fingers. Bake for 20-25 minutes per the directions on the packet of the pastry.

Savoury mini scones - Delia Smith idea. You should be able to find the recipe on her website.

Cheese straws
Cheese and herb scones
Savoury mini quiches (made in muffin tin)
Mini road in the holes (made in muffin tin)
Roasted veg crisps (carrot, beetroot, courgette)
Sundried tomato and basil bread (cut into slices and pair with butter)

beeswain · 05/11/2023 09:46

Very easy - pre made puff pastry, cut into portion sized squares, dollop of onion chutney in the middle (or could make your own caramelised red onion), grate some strong cheese on top and bake.

Definitely a Labrador. He also disliked cucumber. Otherwise he'd eat anything.

Elegant afternoon tea type crustless sandwiches. Remember to salt the cucumber slices and squeeze out the excess water. Made in the morning and packed tightly into containers and they’ll be fine. And maybe smoked salmon with cream cheese ones and ham with mustard. You can even buy crustless bread now.

You need to use lots of good quality butter.

MyAnacondaMight · 06/11/2023 13:39

Thank you for all these brilliant ideas. No allergies or intolerances amongst my team, but a couple of pesce/flexi/vegetarians - so cheese feels like a winner.

I’m leaning towards making two from the following:

  • mini spanikopita (maybe as filo cigars)
  • feta and spring onion bouikos
  • posh veggie sausage rolls, maybe mushroom and chestnut
  • cheese and marmite flapjacks

Obviously I wasn’t going to make sushi the night before or leave it out all day, but point taken - it’s not the right vibe!

I made a load of savoury stuff during lockdown for a friend who works in the NHS. They were up to their armpits in sweet cakes and biscuits!

Assuming they’d be left out, I swerved any meat options and stuck with cheese options.

I did

filo/ spinach filo numbers

used croissant dough to make Parmesan and sun dried tomatoes croissants

bought pastry cases, sprinkled Parmesan over the bases before quiche mixture and turned into mini quiches. These were the best received.

Google Pidy pastry cases. They’re fabulous and they mean I’ll never have to make pastry ever again

Lulu1919 · 08/11/2023 06:41

Cheese straws ?

User202242 · 08/11/2023 06:45

Sausage rolls and cheese and bacon twists are always the winner in our office!

KnickerlessParsons · 08/11/2023 07:58

Mini pasties
Samosas
Posh crisps
Cheese and pineapple on sticks
Sausages on sticks
A cheese and biscuit board
General crudités
Mini pizzas
Posh sausage rolls
Quiche

If you go to an M&S food store there'll be loads of options which you could either buy or take the ideas and make yourself.

Tiny shop bought voulavent cases filled with a creamy mushroom filling
( Take in unfilled and fill cases just before serving)

Chou pastry balls , so tiny profiterols filled with a creamy filling
After baking the profiterols open carefully remove any half baked dough and dry thoroughly in the oven , bring into work seperately from the filling and fill just before serving

Tiny toast with slice goat's cheese topped with caramelised onion , again assemble just before serving , put some green grapes and caramelised walnuts scatterd on the serving platter to complement

Spanish tortilla cut into bite sized pieces served on a slice of crusty bread spread with a smidgen of aioli
