Best oats for porridge in microwave

Hello all. I'm looking for recommendations for the best oats for making porridge in the microwave.

I don't want pre-portioned sachets or 'ready brek' style but just plain oats.

I'm finding that lots of rolled oats only make good porridge on the hob, but for various reasons I really need some that can make good porridge in the microwave.

Mornflake creamy superfast oats

I like Sainsburys big packets of their own brand rolled oats. Much cheaper than brand names and better than Tesco. They make good flapjacks too.

Taste the Difference Sainsburys rolled oats. More expensive than their standard range but they are good in the microwave (IMO).

I use mainly water with a splash of milk and cook for 2 mins. I think the packet says cook for longer though.

I second Mornflake oats. Used to cook them on the hob but now only use microwave

Almondmum · 23/10/2023 08:34

You could soak them overnight? I've done that before and they microwave a lot better. I wonder if blitzing them in a food processor would also work as it would make them smaller?

MsJuniper · 23/10/2023 08:39

Put the microwave on half power and do them for double the time. Add more milk than you think and stir / add more half way through.

I just use big value packs of (non-jumbo) porridge oats but it comes out really nicely with this method.

Sainsbury’s own brand. Nuke them for 4 minutes in the microwave with lots of milk and they come out perfectly. I like my porridge a smooth boiling uniform lake with no discernible oats in it.

LadyDanburysHat · 23/10/2023 08:42

As @Almondmum says the best way would be to soak them overnight, then they have done most of the work of thickening and becoming porridge, then they just need heating.

If that isn't possible, you want cheap oats that are chopped smaller as they will soak the milk quicker.

Aldi organic oats - massive oats and make really good porridge!

EveryKneeShallBow · 23/10/2023 09:15

Third ing the Mornflake oats. So easy to make in the bowl in the microwave and really creamy.

bluechameleon · 23/10/2023 09:56

I buy either Quaker or Scott's because they come in cardboard boxes rather than plastic, but also find Tesco own brand fine. I do then for 1.5 mins, stir, then another minute. What you want to avoid for the microwave is the steel cut ones.

larkstar · 23/10/2023 10:05

Sainsbury's own brand. Roughly 1 part porridge, 2 parts water, 1/2 part milk, pinch of salt.

I blitz them. I live abroad and there's only one type of oats available. Blitzing them cuts down on cooking time.

Flahavans Irish Quick Oats

Agree!!! Delicious!

PuzzledMind · 23/10/2023 19:50

I like Quaker.

Brilliant value at Costco. 60 sachets for around £9!

Whataretheodds · 23/10/2023 19:52

Never had an issue with quaker or any own-brand Porridge oats.

I use water and add kefir/yoghurt once cooked. My DP uses milk. Definitely improves for resting afterwards or soaking before (or cook longer and slower).

greenacrylicpaint · 23/10/2023 19:52

yes to soaking overnight in water (I like to add chia seeds and raisins as well) and then cooking for one min - stir - add milk and cook another min or so.

fine porridge oats make it really gloopy.

Ossoduro2 · 23/10/2023 19:53

I do a vat of porridge in the mornings to feed the whole family, Tesco organic jumbo oats, put it in a massive bowl, double the amount of milk to oats ratio and it cooks in 10 minutes while I’m in the shower.

flanhavans organic jumbo oats also work but I put those in for less time, about 8 minutes.

Daisymay2 · 23/10/2023 19:56

Flahavans giant flakes or Sainsbury’s TTD, but I usually give them a minute, then leave them overnight, and finish off in the morning.

RedPanda2022 · 23/10/2023 20:53

We just use cheap supermarket own. You can use larger more robust oats but on reduced power for longer time. I would just buy cheap ones!
