Thanksgiving dinner

Myself and my DD are thinking of making a Thanksgiving dinner for fun so we can try some of the traditional dishes. We want to try dishes we've never had before or dishes prepared differently. What should we make?

gravy Comes in many forms in America. The basic idea is the same though. Start with meat drippings and the nice brown bits in the pan, add something like flour to provide thickened, then add some liquid and simmer until the magic happens.

turkey gravy starts with the drippings from under the roast turkey, deglaze the pan, add some flour and cook that, then add stock and your desired seasoning and simmer. My favorite recipe adds a bit of cream to make it really lush. I’ve never had a guest who liked gravy not rave about my turkey gravy. I’ve spent years perfecting it.

and the sweet potato and marshmallow- is that served with the turkey?

Yes. Curious for a British palate not used to the sweet / savoury combo (e.g maple syrup on bacon) but it does work. The marshmallows caramelise so not quite as sweet as when raw.

My American family member has a baking tin shaped like corn cobs for the corn bread, passed down from his great grandmother.

@CarolinaInTheMorning
yes to rice - with lots of turkey gravy
do you have oyster dressing - that's my favorite - so good we have it at Christmas too.

We have one of those passed down from my grandmother. In our family, we always called those "cornsticks." We don't eat them for Thanksgiving, though. As a previous poster said, it's Pillsbury Crescent rolls for TG.

@tarheelbaby No oyster dressing for us. We had a bad experience with oysters several years ago, which put us off them for good. But yes, yes to rice and gravy. Turkey gravy is the best thing ever to put on rice.

Don't fry a turkey if you have never done it. You really need special equipment and a big back yard, plus the fire department on speed dial.

The best dressing (it's called dressing, not stuffing, when it's cooked outside the bird, which is better from a food safety standpoint) is southern cornbread dressing. There are lots of recipes on the web; the most important thing is that the cornbread should not be sweet.

As a Yankee I object 😉
