Burnt aubergine chilli - I finally did it!

Having seen the BBC Burnt Aubergine Chilli recipe recommended on here loads of times, plus it always comes up when I've Googled 'family vegetarian meals' (DH is veggie) and the fact we all love Mexican food; it's somewhat bizarre that I've never cooked it before.

Well today I did.

Why the fuck haven't I before? It's unbelievably delicious and now sits absolutely top of the very small league of meals that the whole family loves. I didn't even need to rinse the pan or plates before they hit the dishwasher.

If anyone else has any recommendations of family vegetarian meals, please share and I will promise to not overlook them for years like I did this one. They just need to be egg free.

Whoever was asking about lentils, it's dried lentils in the recipe. You could use tinned and just use a whole tin of one sort rather than 2 x dried. Recipes are a rough guide...experiment.

I don't burn the aubergine either. Stick it in the oven. I either add chipotle sauce or Halen Mon smoked water if I have in the house. https://www.ocado.com/products/halen-mon-oak-smoked-water-278633011

I always have liquid smoke in the cupboard which may work

Interesting re blow torch. How long would that take? Although I'm not convinced that would necessarily be compatible with my "no smoke alarm" objective.
