is olive oil fattening?

does it raise your cholesterol (sp?) ?

dh thinks boiled potatoes are far healthier than the same ones crisped in the oven in pure olive oil (yum).

Is he talking rubbish? I reckon so, (he usually is )

I'm not a nutritionist, but my reasoning goes: we all need some fat in our diet. Olive oil is a 'good fat'. Don't know the science, but it does contain something that helps to lower cholesterol. So if you're going to have fat use one like olive oil, not marg, (because of trans fats), or butter (because of saturated fat).

Don't know what the different veg oils have to differentiate them. I only have olive because it's much more readily available where I live.

Of course, olive oil is fattening because it contains calories. But all food is fattening! Everything in moderation.

Yuk to soya. Nasty stuff which may have lots of grim side effects such as mimicking female hormones in the body (it is linked to dropping male fertility levels amongst other things).

On the other hand, olive oil has been shown to have positive health benefits

Also, nothing wrong with a bit of proper butter here and there

sophy · 07/03/2008 19:35

Olive oil is a healthy fat provided it is not heated to a high temperature.

SheherazadetheGoat · 07/03/2008 19:38

groundnut/peanut oil is not the oil of choice amoungst the foodies cos it is better at high temperatures.

never heard of soya cooking spread but it sounds revolting.

moondog · 07/03/2008 19:40

Nothing wrong with poils or fats.
Nothing wrong with butter either.
Good natural product.
I'd advise to steer clear of spreads though. They've been buggered about with.

right, ta.

I bought this stuff called Alpro (soya) specially for cooking and roasting. It's imported I think from Holland (and I'm not in UK) and says 0 cholesterou...my brain said "what else has it got?

I usually use olive oil for everything except for kids' breakfast pancakes! that's why I was wondering if I could use this soya STUFF!!

An aside: was in supermarket today saw some chinese rice noodles, no fat, no cholesterol etc...no gluten....no additives...no monosodium glut.... but looking at the label it said they had (PER 100g!!!!!!) 59mg of SALT.

B...dy hell!

dolally, as moondog says don't eat stuff which has been processed. margarine is really messed about with.

better not to fry/roast with olive oil though, it performs better raw or warm. groundnut or rapeseed is good for cooking.

dolally · 07/03/2008 22:08

thanks fishie.

(slinks off to find out what groundnut or rapeseed oil is in portuguese!)
