Is fruit enough for lunch?

cosypompoms · 07/10/2023 11:41

I eat a healthy diet, porridge for breakfast and something cooked for scratch like curry, chilli, spag bol.

Do you think it's ok if a couple of times a week I just have fruit for lunch?...banana, apple and satsuma for example. That's enough for me if I'm out and about. If I was at home I'd have soup typically.

I eat our 'evening' meal at 4pm with the kids so it's not long to wait to eat a proper meal.

If you're not particularly hungry at that time, why not? Fairly big sugar hit though, from all the fructose.

DurhamDurham · 07/10/2023 11:46

It's a light lunch, not many calories so it's may not see you through until dinner time.
You'll probs get a mid afternoon slump from the sugar rush from the fruit since that's all you're having.

It's the sugar I'm worried about really I suppose.

Hahaha yes you are right I can eat whole birthday cake if I want as I am an adult.

But I want to be healthy and I wondered if there was some reason why this might be a big no no, for example such a big hit of sugar.

Oh don't be silly its a piece of fruit !

MidnightOnceMore · 07/10/2023 11:55

If your diet is balanced overall, your weight is in the healthy range and you feel well this is an unnecessary question IMO.

Mrsjayy · 07/10/2023 11:57

Have I stumbled onto a thread where an orange is akin to a share bag of haribo

Summer2424 · 07/10/2023 11:58

Hi @cosypompoms
I think this is ok. I always have my fruit in the morning, afternoon is ok too as you have enough time to burn the sugar.

Jk987 · 07/10/2023 12:00

It's an exaggeration that a piece of fruit will give you you a sugar rush followed by a slump!! If that's the case I dread to think what would happen if you had a chocolate digestive!

Eat what makes you feel good. A 4pm evening meal is extremely early though. I'd eat later when the kids have gone to bed but I'm not you!

griegwithhimandhim · 07/10/2023 12:07

I think the OP is suggesting three pieces of fruit, not one. So there would be a sugar hit from that. If someone has to watch their blood sugar levels (at risk from pre-diabetes for instance), then it would be an issue.

There's also the question of the acid from the fruit hanging round your teeth all afternoon.

MidnightOnceMore · 07/10/2023 12:10

Once you're worrying whether you can eat raw fruit, I think the diet fad has gone too far.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/10/2023 12:15

My friend was always told she couldn’t eat bananas growing up because they were too sugary and fattening. Safe to say that she has very warped thinking about health and fitness now and takes it to the extreme.

OP, as long as throughout the day you’re having a balanced diet, you’re fine. Don’t eat more than you’re hungry for.

I was thinking the same but some posters on here have the most weird attitudes to food. No way would I ask any diet related question, eat what you like in moderation

Darkmode2 · 07/10/2023 12:16

You'd be better off with a bit of protein aswell as or instead of fruit

Undethetree · 07/10/2023 12:22

It's FINE eat just fruit for lunch! I regularly do this. Humans are designed to eat plenty of raw fruit and veg.

A small handful of nuts will lower the GI rating if ypu are worries about a sugar spike but honestly....you don't need to be.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/10/2023 17:39

Well I'd be starving with just that, and especially after just eating porridge, which makes me more hungry not less, but if you're not hungry, it's fine, why wouldn't it be?

PickAChew · 07/10/2023 17:51

If you're fine on it, it's fine. If you're worried about sugar, maybe just have a light salad or some crudites, as your lunchtime snack.

I often have breakfast at 7:30 then end up eating nothing until about 2-3pm, if I go out so it's not like you're leaving it that much longer.

flowellaben · 07/10/2023 18:26

According to Zoe nutrition, you should eat fruit with protein or fat to combat the blood sugar hit. So have some full fat yoghurt with your fruit, or some cheese.
