Snack ideas for kids

I expect this has been done many times before, but I can't see any recent posts and the search feature is useless. So...

I feel like we've got into a bit of a rut with giving our kids unhealthy, sugar-filled snacks and I'd really appreciate if people could share the kinds of things they give their kids for a bit of inspiration.

They're 3 and 6. They already eat lots of fruit so not concerned about getting more of that in, just about reducing the sugar and processed rubbish really.

Thanks in advance!

Mine love marmite rice cakes. For school we buy the branded ones, at home we just use cheapo plain ones with a smear of butter and marmite.
Apple slices and peanut butter.
Small bowl of cereal, sometimes dry as nibbles
Bread sticks, including the fancy skinny ones with sesame seeds
Hovis crackers and cream cheese
Popcorn (not the sweet one, and homemade is super cheap and fun to make)
Veggie sticks and houmous
Slice of ham, spread with cream cheese, till up and slice into snails

Ooh I'm interested in this! DS is autistic and one of his triggers is hunger so we have been asked to send him to school with 2 snacks + lunch every day! If anyone has any ideas that can be boxed up reasonably well they'd be appreciated.

Is he able to help do his snacks and lunch? It's a great life skill, and if he had some ownership it might be easier for him to understand what the point of it is.
Maybe try to avoid things that really need refrigeration, so veggie often easier than meats (except salami which can cope out of the fridge)

make your own popcorn in a pan, and don't add anything to it, and it's fun and very cheap. Breadsticks, rice cakes, crackers, veg sticks and dip, cubes of cheese. And really making sure meals are full of wholegrains and protein, so they stay full and don't need snacks so much. And have a drink if they say they're hungry.

Macadamia nuts roasted then blended with a bit of coco powder makes a healthy version of Nutella to have on toast.

Most supermarkets have mini breadsticks that are just flour and olive oil and nothing weird added.
I add a couple cubes of cheese and a mini cucumber. They love that.

Some really great ideas here - they're super fussy but loads of things they'd eat here :) thanks all!

Carrot sticks and hummus
Oatcakes spread with peanut butter
A piece of cheese on toast
Cashew nuts (unsalted)
A pear cut up with cheese cubes
A fruit smoothie with some nut butter blended in it

If you spread chickpeas on a baking sheet spray with a little oil and season with smoked paprika/garlic granules/cumin or what ever flavour you like, then bake in the oven they go crunchy and make a great snack.
Fritata will keep three days in the fridge and chopped into cubes is ideal for snacking.
Hard boiled eggs
Make a batch of oven baked falafel
Mini chicken skewers (just marinate chopped chicken breast and thread on cocktail sticks)

  • Celery sticks filed with peanut butter
  • Houmous with celery, carrot and/or sticks of pepper
  • Falafel and homous
  • Cauliflower cut into florets, lightly baked till starting to brown. On their own, they are nutty, but you can drizzle tahini/lemon dressing on too

If you’re keen on getting them to eat more veggies, lightly roasting a tray of their favourites with a light drizzle of honey goes down really well. Lasts a couple of days and tasty hot or cold.

A few mentions of popcorn, I would stay clear of this as an option for your 3 year old as it is one of the highest-risk chocking hazard foods. All the snacks we offer are already mentioned above with some new ones I'll be making note of too.

I've just done homemade lunch able for DS - buttered crackers sandwiched together and then cut out circles of ham and cheese. It's hard to think of different ideas all the time!
