Meals your kids rave about

Thought I would start a thread about meals your kids have found lip smacking. It's rare mine say wow that's delicious. This really isn't a place to comment on the health of food, it's just light hearted and we might get some new ideas. My disclaimer however is my daughter eats a ton of peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, carrot and avocado etc alongside most meals. Phew.

@Fallingthroughclouds i just typed it all out but seem to have lost it! Will see if it turns up and if not will type again. I have got a flaky signal.

VanillaFlotilla · 27/09/2023 19:58

Butternut squash risotto is hands down the most asked-for meal round here

Tinyant · 27/09/2023 20:02

@VanillaFlotilla recipe please! Sounds great

If given the choice DD (9yo) would have pasta with butter and cheese every day for dinner.

Add garlic and a squeeze of lemon and she's a woman after my own heart.

OK more of ours.

Toasted sandwich, usually salami, tomato and cheese done in the frying pan, butter on the outside for her (v.active and teeny).

Similarly tortillas with tuna mayo, tomato and cheese ham & cheese, avocado etc. Toasted into a triangle again in my amazing frying pan which is 100% non stick but without that nasty coating.

Cheats Carbonara

Homemade Sushi

Most of our most popular meals revolve around chopped salad veg (normally just pepper, cucumber, tomato) :

Cous cous mixed with cheap mint sauce, chopped veg, maybe olives, served with fried halloumi

Pesto pasta salad, with chopped veg and capers (and ideally sundried tomatoes)

KFC style wraps with any form of sliced chicken product, salad, and sweet chilli.

@Tinyant we like this one:

Because it's foolproof and smooth rather than lumpy Smile

Both my DC love dahl or any mildish curry. Pasta is always a hit, we do spag bol, meatballs, lasagne, ratatouille and pesto. They love fajita or taco night, where I plonk everything on the table and they assemble their own.

Chicken kyivs (shop bought) with wedges or chips and peas or baked beans is probably their favourite lazy meal.

Blingstar · 27/09/2023 20:32

I'm enjoying this thread.

Another surprising favourite here is a spiced mince (I've even done it with crumbled firm tofu and it was eaten). Spring onions, chilli to your taste, garlic, paprika, cumin, turmeric and tamari sauce. Serve it on baby gem lettuce. Eat with your hands.

onwardandupwards · 27/09/2023 21:00

Omelette, mac and cheese topped with crispy onion and bacon, chicken and waffles and loaded potato skins/ nachos and dips all go down well here with the kids

thankyouforthedayz · 27/09/2023 21:04

High school lunch staple is Pasta, beans and cheese. The kids now made regularly at home and would live on it.

BoilingHotand50something · 27/09/2023 21:18

It’s not actually korma seasoning.

so brown the chicken
add 1 tbsp flour, 2 tsp mild curry powder, 1 tsp ginger powder
stir until cooked
add coconut milk, chicken stock cube, squeeze of tom purée, sliced mushrooms, tin of pineapple chunks with juice, big handful of raisins

add some water and bubble away for a while to soften the pineapple and plump up the raisins

serve with rice and enjoy!

FinaleyDee · 27/09/2023 21:40

Love this thread - we are going through a real rut with meals at the moment, there are some great ideas here!
My boy is obsessed with chilli, rice and “nachos” (cool original Doritos really) at the moment.
I think it’s because he gets to eat crisps for dinner but I don’t care as he eats so much of the chilli (with mixed beans, peppers, mushrooms).
He also loves a mild curry and dhal, again with rice. Homemade pizzas go down well, as does pasta and sauce - especially when he gets to choose the pasta shape.
Meat and two veg type meals aren’t going down as well.

SensitiveB · 27/09/2023 22:03

Ours get most excited about pad Thai which I get a recipe for off Google each time but find a chore to make !
They also love any Indian curry or dahl and I fry poppadoms with it .
another popular one here is wraps ; I fry red onion and red peppers and we spread either sweet chilli sauce or concentrated tomato paste on the wrap and add the veg with any meat then add cheese and grill

mamaduckbone · 27/09/2023 22:09

Ds17 still absolutely loves spinach and ricotta tortellini with pesto, bacon and broccoli (the broccoli has to be a bit over cooked so it mushes in with the pesto) and loads of Parmesan. It can also be done with normal pasta if filled pasta isn't available.
It's been one of his favourites since he was about 3.
Also, Sunday pasta (named as such because we used to have it after swimming on a Sunday when he was little). It's just tuna, sweetcorn, pasta and mayo with grated cheddar melted on top.
I reckon those 2 meals will be his staples when he moves out for Uni.

Thank you, been in so many intense threads recently I wanted something positive. Sounds great, love the eat with the hands element.

Burgers

Sunflowerpumpkin · 28/09/2023 13:49

Our version of Hunter's chicken has always been popular. Put sliced cooked chicken in a smallish microwaveable bowl, spread (well cover really) with a mixture of tomato ketchup, a little soy sauce, thyme and allspice, cooked bacon on top and then cheese sliced on that. Put in the microwave to heat/melt the cheese.

Mine are pretty good eaters, the only thing we don't really have is fish and that's down to DH and me not being keen

Jambalaya always gets wolfed down, we sometimes just use a smoked sausage or frankfurters instead of chorizo.

Cheese & potato pie which is basically just cheesey baked mash which we have with sausages and beans or chops/gammon and veg

Ramen bowls are a firm favourite and really easy to just top everyone's with what veg etc they like.

Walking tacos they absolutely love these and think it's a real treat when they have them

Pasta bake with their favourite pizza toppings

Katsu curry with rice

Mayflower Chinese curry with rice

Chicken satay stir fry noodles

Meatball subs , I tend to use a hidden veggie sauce for these but they'd never guesse

Mini toad in the holes with mash and peas.

Sausage rolls with chips and beans

Turkey burgers, chips and usually carrot sticks, peppers and cherry tomatoes.

Kebabs skewers with pitta bread

henrysugar12 · 28/09/2023 14:51

My dd loves a chicken casserole which is tomato based with chorizo in. Tbh every time I make it it's slightly different depending on what's in the fridge! But I always serve it with cubed potatoes that have a herby coating.

Robin60 · 28/09/2023 18:50

My two DD absolutely loved spicy chicken and noodles…. This comprised of strips of chicken breast coated in Pataks balti paste cooked in a wok with cooked noodles added. This was stirred frequently so the noodles took on the flavour of the balti paste and they also crisped up beautifully. So easy but it guaranteed a smile and two clean plates.

My Foster son is always so appreciative of meals I cook for him. Probably because he remembers being hungry. His favourite are home made lasagne with garlic bread, beef stew and vegetables, pork casserole with apple and root vegetables, spaghetti Bolognese, salmon new boiled potatoes carrots and peas, gammon ham mashed potatoes carrots and green beans, also chicken breast cubes and bacon lardons cooked with creme fresh and blue cheese sauce with peas over tagiatelli, plus any roast dinner. He also loves curry, or Chinese. The only food he doesn't like are baked beans and Brussel sprouts. He absolutely loves home baked ginger cookies, cupcakes and apple pie or crumble with cream or ice cream too. He loves a cooked breakfast or breakfast pancakes with blueberries and strawberries with maple syrup. Not much he doesn't like really.
