How do you store eggs?

I have only ever kept eggs in the fridge and I was reading that keeping them outside of the fridge could result in them being exposed to changes in temperature and could become unsafe. I see a lot of very cute egg storage items for the kitchen counter though and MIL always keeps them in the kitchen counter too.
I have seen a beautiful ceramic hen pot for eggs storage that I'd love to buy (lol) but I'm thinking it's probably not the best way of storing them?

Never kept eggs in the fridge and my parents didn’t when I was a child, they still don’t. Never had a problem!

SirenSays · 25/09/2023 14:02

Now winters coming it's the perfect time to try it out 😉 Enjoy your little hen!

Mine stay in the laundry, which is a bit cooler than the kitchen because of the catflap/no heating. My mum always keeps them on the side though.

Mine are fresh from the hen - I've used some a month old when we've had a glut (or when DS keeps taking the 'best' ones, and ignoring the ones at the bottom of the helter skelter)

Cowlover89 · 25/09/2023 14:15

I never put eggs in the fridge

Teddleshon · 25/09/2023 14:16

I keep 5 at a time on my island in an adorable egg holder from Bordallo Pinheiro and the rest in the fridge. Eggs should be at room temperature for most cooking, especially baking and home made mayonnaise. Also better for omelettes.

Justlovedogs · 25/09/2023 14:20

I'm a fridge person but get them out 30 minutes or so before cooking to get them to room temperature.
No idea why they're in the fridge, although it's as much a space thing as anything else 🤷‍♀️.

WhatapityWapiti · 25/09/2023 14:24

I want to say “chill out” but that is maybe not the right phrase in this context!

It’s fine to keep them out on the counter. Just don’t store them on a sunny windowsill or right next to your oven.

thelongroad · 25/09/2023 14:28

I keep them in the fridge. I wouldn't have the space to keep them out anywhere! And I buy them directly from the farm, where they are kept refrigerated.

plumtreebroke · 25/09/2023 14:32

I put eggs in the fridge, but bring to room temperature before use (when I remember). Back in the day you did sometimes get bad eggs. Just feel safer with them in the fridge although I'm sure it's usually not necessary.

PurpleSky09 · 25/09/2023 20:44

Mine are kept in the cupboard. I read that eggs kept in the fridge end up tasting like the contents of the fridge and that made me feel a bit queasy and I've never put them in the fridge since!

Supermarkets are meticulous about food safety & maintaining the ‘cold chain’ for perishable products. They don’t refrigerate eggs, so why on earth would anyone refrigerate them at home?

Because it's bad to subject them to changes in temperature. If they were in fridges in the supermarket, they'd be taken out and transported home and be out the fridge a while.

It's better for them to not be refrigerated in a shop because they're taken out again but once you get them home you're supposed to refrigerate them.

Dreamstosell · 25/09/2023 21:06

I’ve never kept them in the fridge and always been fine. But they’re just in the uncute box that they’re sold in. I now want a cute hen to keep them in 🤣
(Photo of cute ceramic hen please)

We eat loads of eggs and have only ever kept them in the cupboard in quite a hot sunny kitchen.
The only time that they went bad was when we went away for several weeks and the eggs were about three months out of date when we came back.
They don’t need to be in the fridge.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/09/2023 16:53

In a china Chicken on the windowsill.

Tarkan · 26/09/2023 16:56

I have a ceramic hen for mine and I love her. Never ever had a problem with an egg in it, I do the float test if I'm not sure when I've had some around a while but that's a rare occurrence in our house.

AfterTheRainComesSun · 27/09/2023 10:53

I should add, my kitchen is very tiny so it's hard to keep them away from a source of heat!

I keep mine in one of those ceramic hens!

I once said I thought they were cute in front of my auntie and next time I saw her she had bought me one she saw in a charity shop window, I love it.

AfterTheRainComesSun · 27/09/2023 10:58

My parents kept chicken in the 50s,60s didn't even have a fridge then. I used to keep chicken. They are on the worktop. None of the shops I go to have them in a fridge,(Tesco Morrison, Lidl, they are on the shelf.
