Yorkshire type meal / buffet

We have family visiting from overseas, we’re planning a chilled out evening and was thinking of pie and peas, someone has suggested having Yorkshires too.

What do people thing of pie, roast potatoes, mushy peas, Yorkshire puddings, gravy as a very informal grab and go type meal to eat alongside a cards / board game evening.

Maybe we’d be better with slow cooked brisket instead of pie?

Wouldn’t be for me, I could manage pie and peas, the rest definitely not, much too carby.

snatchabook · 20/09/2023 20:41

I mean, it sounds delicious but does it all go together? And it's not really grab and go, is it? Not knocking it, I'd certainly enjoy it!

RampantIvy · 20/09/2023 20:46

No. Too stodgy.

I live in Yorkshire. Pie and peas is pie (could be meat and potato pie, mince and onion pie or pork pie), mushy peas, gravy and mint sauce. Nothing else.

If you want to do Yorkshires then fill them with sausages, vegetables and onion gravy.

Fannydombey · 20/09/2023 20:48

Yorkshire here too. Pie and peas means pork pie and mushy peas where I come from. In a bowl with mint sauce - nowt else.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 20/09/2023 20:50

The original plan was exactly as you describe, pea and peas with mint sauce. It’s Canadian relative who’s requested Yorkshire pudding. I think you’ve confirmed my doubts about it. Thank you

I should specify, I’m also in Yorkshire but an incomer of 25 years who married a Yorkshireman. He’s weird though and only eats beige food so I’m not asking him 😉

Ooh it’s sounds lovely! How can you deny your Canadian guest esp if they’ve requested yorkshires!
yorkshires, mushy peas, pie. Maybe even gravy. Heaven!

DiDonk · 20/09/2023 21:01

The problem with yorkshire puds is you'll have to make them there and then, whereas everything else can be made ahead and they're only really nice straight from the oven so changing your relaxed buffet to a eat-it-right-now thing

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 20/09/2023 21:03

Big bowl of gravy with yorkshires and roast potatoes to dip into it like a gravy fondue.

Or maybe I'm just filthy.

It is bloody good though.

Steev · 20/09/2023 21:13

Cook them before, freeze then bung in oven. I would serve them with a pie

Lagershandy · 20/09/2023 21:13

In Sheffield we eat our pies with Henderson's Relish, it is a unique condiment similar looking to Worcestershire Sauce but tastes nothing like it. It has been made in Sheffield since the 1800's, and runs strong in the blood of every Sheffielder. If you live in South Yorkshire you will find it in every big supermarket.

Also my Mum used to make 'seasoned' Yorkshire puddings which had sage and onion added to the batter, absolutely delicious!
On Sunday tea time Mum made cucumber and onion slices steeped in malt vinegar which we ate with salad.

(What I wouldn't give to taste my Mums Yorkshires again)

AtleastitsnotMonday · 20/09/2023 21:16

What pie filling were you planning? I'd make giant yorkshires filled with whatever you were going to put in the pie with peas on the side (or in the Yorkshire if the filling could take it) and topped with mini, crispy roast potatoes.

Sundance5 · 20/09/2023 21:22

I have done Yorkshire pudding canapés before, small Yorkshire, slice of beef, dab of horseradish and gravy inside. Not sure how Yorkshire that is though

Notagains · 20/09/2023 21:31

If they want Yorkshire's don't do pie as well that would be much too stodgy. Either do the full roast beef dinner, toad in the hole with mash and peas or giant Yorkshire filled with minced beef l, onions and gravy, mash and peas.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 20/09/2023 21:39

Ooh I like the idea of filling the Yorkshire with the pie filling and then having sides. Although, when I make yorkshires they’re massive and you can’t fill them because there’s no ‘dip’ in the middle.

Sounds like faff to me, I’d do a rich beef and ale pie, peas and gravy. All can be made ahead. I’m not a Yorkshire pudding fan outside of a roast dinner despite being born here.

Yes to Henderson’s, I used to get it posted to me when I lived overseas. 🤩

You could make Parkin and serve it with salted caramel ice cream as a nod to Yorkshire.

JupiterTheFireEngine · 21/09/2023 08:45

Can I vote for Yorkshire fondue as described above, followed by pie and peas. And maybe leftover Yorkshires and jam to finish

LittleObe · 21/09/2023 10:40

It's a bit much. I've made mini Yorkshires into canapés before just with some pork belly, gravy and apple sauce. A little mouthful to get them started.

Then maybe pie and peas with mint sauce and some extra veg.

Whataretheodds · 21/09/2023 15:37

I'd get some Aunt Bessie's yorkshires and do them on the side or as an amuse bouche. I went to a restaurant that served mini yorkshires with gravy between starter and main.
