If you eat pork or even if you don't, and you don't want to soon be held to ransom by whoever in the world has it because Britain's farmers have been driven out of business by rising feed costs, please click here:

C'mon, folks! NO ONE cares about Britain's farmers?

Expat

I think people in this country don't care where food comes from only that it their when they want it .

I just don't understand how we can stand by and continally not support farmers who are producing food at a loss all the time. I mean what other industry would sell at a loss of £26 per pig.

suedonim · 04/03/2008 18:56

I care! Have signed the petition. We're not huge pork eaters but I buy decent bacon and sausages and boycotted Dutch stuff for years as their welfare standards used to be low. I'm not sure if that's still the case?

AngharadGoldenhand · 04/03/2008 19:01

I only buy British pork and bacon.

Will sign.

expatinscotland · 04/03/2008 19:03

I try not to believe you're right, lizzie, although most of me agrees.

It's sad to see such apathy in society, especially because by the time most folks come round to care, only because the price has gone up, it will be too late.

It's not now, so I'm giving this another bump!

There'd be no ASDA without farmers, folks!

expatinscotland · 04/03/2008 19:04

I'm not a farmer myself, just for some reason I care about British food producers - all of them.

I care. I used to know a pig farmer - he was as mad as a balloon, and very funny!

best way to support your local pig farmer is to go to a good butcher or farmers market.

Jeepers · 04/03/2008 19:45

I care very much. Have signed and will only buy british

rantinghousewife · 04/03/2008 19:48

I have signed but, I never buy my pork from the supermarket, I buy it direct from the (free range) farm a couple of miles down the road.

mamabear2b · 04/03/2008 19:50

Have signed

Bump

expatinscotland · 04/03/2008 19:55

I buy mine from a free range farmer as well, ranting, but they're all feeling the squeeze.

rantinghousewife · 04/03/2008 20:04

Yes I understand that totally Expat and I'm quite willing (and more importantly I have access) to support locally produced food.
Our local pig farmer is very enterprising as well, he opens up the farm for free, so you can take the dcs, (it's a great way to kill an hour or two) and they have a smashing cafe/restaurant, which is booked up for sunday lunch every sunday.
It's a shame that the producers who have to sell to supermarkets get such a raw deal though, although I know this is more about grain prices.

expatinscotland · 04/03/2008 20:57

Our pig farmer also has a shop on the premises and visitors are welcome.

He's lovely and catches piglets for the wee ones to stroke.

He and his wife raise British pedigree pigs.

It's Ballencrieff farms, btw!

Shameless bump for British pig farmers .

WelliesAndPyjamas · 04/03/2008 21:02

Signed it for both DH and I. We only used to buy british pork when we lived in the UK. And DH used to be a pig farmer (before becoming a copper - snigger!)

Eve · 04/03/2008 21:02

....I was going to be really wicked and say , you support them even if they drive 4x4's!

...but sorry...riled by other thread!

I am from a farming background, my father farmed but had 2 other jobs as well to make end meet and that was 30 years ago, needless to say not one of my 4 siblings farms!

The farmer we rent fields of for the horses, is well into his 70s as a tenant farmer, and loses money hand over fist on his sheep.

Signed by me...though, given this Govt has shown no concern for the last 10 years for farmers, doubt they will start now.

expatinscotland · 04/03/2008 21:04

LOL, oh, yes, Eve, our pig farmer has a 4x4 -handy for their business!

They also have a white van for transporting their products the 20 miles to the farmer's market 3 Sats./month.

Hopefully, their daughter and her family will take over the business once they retire, but their other two children are in completely different industries.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 05/03/2008 13:58

Signed, and bumping for today.

Expat - have you read The Farm by Richard Benson? (thread about it under adult non-fiction). Really recommend it (even if it was on the Richard and Judy Book Club).

Whooosh · 05/03/2008 14:17

I have just moved into a converted pig shed!
Well not exactly, the small business I am setting up has.The farmer was losing far too much money rearing pigs so has decided to convert the buildings to light industrial/offices.
Sad as it is,we love it up there and have kept lots of "piggy" items for the office and workshop.
Needlesss to say,we don't buy Danish in this house.
Petition signed.

IorekByrnison · 05/03/2008 14:41

Done. Now that worldwide food prices are starting rise so dramatically, just maybe the government will start turning their attention to supporting the farming industry. But I'm not holding my breath.

BTW, anyone see that Molly Dineen documentary recently "The Lie of the Land"?

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 05/03/2008 16:18

Oink, oink.
