CAKE Question: Fondant figures

Please be honest, if you’ve tried making fondant figures for a celebration cake, was it easy or do you wish you’d just bought them?
I don’t want to order a load of specialist modelling icing just to realise it’s a complete faff and waste of time for a beginner.
I can make a perfectly decent cake but I’ve always worked with buttercream.
Thanks

1000% buy them. If you’re making cute bespoke ones, maybe worth the effort. But if you’re making a Peppa pig cake, just buy some Peppa pig figurines. Especially if it’s just for a family or friends birthday.

edit: typo

Adding £25 does really bulk up the price of making the cake, so it depends how well you think you can make them yourselves. I know I can, but I also know it takes me aaaaages. And I have little confidence that what I’ve made looks decent. I usually only buy a couple of lose figurines which you can get a bit cheaper than that. And usually don’t buy fondant ones but plastic ones so it doubles up as a toy afterwards. For the price of those eBay ones you could buy this:

When I wanted the Squirrels from Hey Duggee as toppers, I just bought little toy figures, looked perfect and could play with afterwards. Better in my opinion than fondant nobody really wants to eat!

I’ve looked at toys and fondant figures and there’s just something fancier about the fondant BUT I’m thinking maybe a fondant flat topper with a main character face and toys at various points around the edges to decorate.

I’ve made lots and they can be tricky to make for a cake, a human especially. If you’re making them with fondant, you need to add something like gum trex powder to harden them, to hold their shape. This does however render them inedible. There are some great You tube clips to show you how, but if you don’t have all the tools they may take longer than you think they will.

If it has to look like a specific character I would buy them. If it can be a generic animal eg a sheep. Give it a whirl.
