Suggest me work snacks to stock up on!

Invariably autumn and winter sees me 1) spend money at the work shop around 2-4 pm2) to buy largely unhealthy overpriced snacks to ride me through dark afternoons and relentless meetings and team sandpits (grr) 3) which adds the pounds in weight and 4) reduced the pounds in bank.

This year Mum has kindly offered to treat me to a well stocked work food cupboard (I have my own office) so what shall I get?

Pointers -

  1. Carbs are a big no- my body can’t handle gluten of any kind but more broadly high carbs are unlikely to work
  2. I do appear to need a sugary fix after meeting number 17 at 3 pm though so seeking ideas for high protein granola (although that will need long life milk I guess), almond flour cookies or dried mango or similar
  3. I also have very savoury tooth and LOVE chilli and garlic (a bit random!)

Any suggestions that would be long-life, cupboard friendly and hopefully last till Xmas closure ?

And I understand sugar = carbs I meant grains! I find it very difficult to process grains of most kinds wheat being the killer one .

I’ve just started a new job and in order to avoid the inevitable morning chaos and not having time for breakfast/to pack a lunch I keep (reduced sugar) breakfast biscuits and cup a soups at work.

I take in a big tub each of hummus and yoghurt, a box of celery/carrots sticks and a packet of wholewheat pitta on a Monday for the week, and keep a fruit bowl on my desk.

You could sub the pitta for gluten free crackers - they’re lovely with sweet chilli hummus, and buy/make granola bars or flapjacks but tbh if you want a proper sweet treat, I’d just have something small…a two finger Kit Kat, couple of Jaffa cakes or a slice of malt loaf.

Worth checking out Graze - they do a lot of their range in bigger packs now - lots of nuts and dried pulses that would give you a gluten free energy boost and plenty of flavour options.

Ooh graze is an excellent idea! Also I’ll be working from the office 2-3 days a week so I think yes getting in some veggie sticks and Hummous in the weekend grocery shop for home and taking that in on Monday for work fridge is also a great idea. I always take leftovers for lunch and these are great top ups which might help prevent the “3 pm let’s go to the shop and burn £ on junky snacking” thing

Chilli & garlic olives.
Maybe those appetina packs of feta, olives, garlic.
Cheese cubes.
Chorizo or pepperami.
Pork scratchings or crunch.
Gluten free granola.
Nuts.
Crudités with hummus or alioi.

I am
going to second graze. You can order the boxes to be delivered or by them in bulk. I personally would prefer anything pre portioned as it’s easier to stick within limits that way.

I like the nairns oat biscuits, a quick google has told me that they are gluten free. I like the dark chocolate and the ginger but there is a big range. They are low cals, reduced sugar for a biscuit too!

Combusting · 10/09/2023 08:26

Loving the savoury ideas. In fact a lot of my 3 pm buys at the overpriced work shop is actually chilli and garlic flavoured things

Eat a proper meal and wean yourself of snacks, you'll save yourself both types of pounds? It took me about a month/6 weeks and it was well worth it.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/09/2023 08:28

Quick reminder that hummus is incredibly easy to make at home and you can experiment with different flavours in it. Though not sure about garlic at work.

Baldieheid · 10/09/2023 08:32

Fruit
Cherry tomatoes
Crackers and a block of cheese (cut into sticks by me, this is way cheaper than buying individually wrapped minis)
Cuppa soups or homemade soup
Olives and cold meat
Yogurts
Crisps in multipack sizes

These are also my lunch elements so I always have stores in.
I mix and match depending on what I fancy each week.

I have a wee fridge so no restrictions re storage

bryceQ · 10/09/2023 08:37

Honestly I'd just eat real food not "snack processed food"

If you have a fridge, small amount full fat Greek yoghurt
Oat cake with nut butter
Piece of fruit
Avocado
Nuts

Lots of great thoughts including many already in my day to day :)

Love making Hummous. Also works with butter beans we’ve found!

Yes, butter beans, red kidney beans, some other tinned beans from the World Food section. I add chilly flakes, or gerkhins, jalapeños, paprika, lemon juice etc.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/09/2023 08:44

You can also use lentils for this. The calories do add up if they’re so savoury you end up eating more.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 10/09/2023 10:12

You can make hummus with broad beans too.

coodawoodashooda · 12/09/2023 06:43

Handful of nuts

This! If you eat a decent lunch with protein and healthy fats then you probably won't need a snack cupboard.

MintJulia · 12/09/2023 07:07

I take a small tub of mixed nuts and raisins. Protein and sweetness to power me through the last hour.

Home made flapjacks are good too especially if you add some seeds or dried cherries.

Lovelydovey · 12/09/2023 07:19

Some great ideas. I'm also very into dried mushroom snacks - very savoury and crunchy!

Shutuptrevor · 12/09/2023 07:23

I’d try moving your lunch 30-60 minutes later and doubling the protein in it, then having a smoothie/juice/apple and cheese type snack about 3:30/4.

Willmafrockfit · 12/09/2023 07:33

hard boiled egg?

Packedlunchoftinkywinky · 12/09/2023 07:37

Medjool dates filled with nut butter. Great mid afternoon pick me up with a cuppa. x

orangegato · 12/09/2023 10:33

Peanuts.

Protein bars, I get they’re UPF but are delicious and better than a chocolate bar. 20g protein for about 200 cals and no sugar.

Flavoured lentil chips.

ODFOx · 12/09/2023 10:44

For your spice fix what about pepperamis (which don't need refrigerating) or Bombay mix?
