Packed lunches for sandwich dodgers

So, the latest thing that my fussy 12yo will no longer eat is sandwiches. So I'm looking for (ideally) low cost, low effort alternatives.

She does have a list as long as your arm of other dislikes, but for now I'll take any suggestions.

Pasta? Sausage roll or pasty? Wrap? Quiche?

Fivemoreminutes1 · 05/09/2023 14:51

Pasta salad - my DS has his with tuna, sweetcorn, chopped tomatoes and a little bit of mayo. DH prefers leftover cooked chicken in a honey and mustard dressing.
Quiche
Soup in a thermos

Fivemoreminutes1 · 05/09/2023 14:52

Cheese and crackers

rickandmorts · 05/09/2023 14:52

Tuna pasta salad
Chicken and sweetcorn pasta salad
Does she like wraps?
Veg sticks and hummus
Frittatta
Quiche
Boiled eggs
Pork pies/ sausage rolls/ cheese and onion pasties
Soup in a flask in winter
Cold noodles with veg/ meat
Pretty much any leftovers cold

Some ideas, hope this helps 😄

Used to give dd lots of veggies that she liked and maybe chicken strips with hummus or dips in a pot. She at least ate them then.
also cold breaded chicken. Again I wouldn’t eat it but she did.

salads. She liked a tub of lettuce cucumber pepper etc and then a little pot of dressing to put on along with a seperate tub with chicken ham or tofu to add to the salad.

cheese and crackers, pitta and hummus

she just didn’t like the soggy sandwich fillings and to be honest neither do I. So could basically give a sandwich but not made up, pitta or sandwich thin then some meat/cheese then salad all seperate and she would either make a sandwich with it or eat it all separately.

clipclop5 · 05/09/2023 15:04

DD was the same and always hated sandwiches. She usually took soup/stews in a flask, salads, pasta salad or cheese, ham + crackers instead

TheHorneSection · 05/09/2023 15:11

DD only eats one type of sandwich and hates cold pasta (🤦🏻‍♀️) so she often has a salad - spinach, peppers, olives, carrot, some form of protein, and oat cakes instead of bread.

Crudités and crackers with hummus and chicken strips
Ploughman's- cheese, celery, chutney, ham, grapes
Pasta/couscous/quinoa salad
Leftover noodles

At 12 she's old enough to get involved in planning and prepping her lunch. Does she have any suggestions?

Rosiepeta · 05/09/2023 15:16

Dd is the same , she has either chilled pizza , pesto pasta, soup or chow mein in a thermos.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 05/09/2023 15:21

Soup in a flask and pesto pasta are our current staples.
Noodles, frittata and quiche will work I think.
She doesn't like boiled eggs, salad as a main course (IYSWIM) or what she calls "raw cheese" Hmm

Her helpful suggestions are that I move her onto school lunches so she can have a plate of chips every day, or that she just takes crisps and a snickers.

Soreen / malt loaf
Flapjacks
Scones - fruit, cheese
Fruit salad
Yogurt and fruit
Pittas with various fillings
Quesadilla or tortilla type wraps with various fillings

Overthinkingperhaps · 05/09/2023 23:19

Nachos with guacamole and 'raw cheese' that made me laugh. And a salsa.

Cold pizza

I sometimes take a veggie hotdog sausage in a thermos and put it on the roll at work. No facilities.

Soup.

DiscoBeat · 05/09/2023 23:37

DS15 has a big tub of pasta and tuna (or chicken) in stir through sauce most days, with fruit and veg for snacks. DS13 tends to like a tuna wrap.

ChoresSuck · 05/09/2023 23:39

When my DC went off bread they started liking bagels.

Ponderingwindow · 05/09/2023 23:45

Bagel and cream cheese.

honestly, if she likes soup, that is a winner for me. You can make in advance or do store bought and it can be both filling and nutritious.

my own picky eater doesn’t care about variety. I have sent the same exact lunch every day for years. She also has the same exact breakfast every weekday.

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 09/09/2023 10:06

ha ha OP, your DD is related to mine in her helpful suggestions. Mine is now 17 and spends some of her wages from her part time job on junk food for lunch. I never cracked healthy eating for her, though I have tried many of the strategies suggested, so can't really help. Good luck anyway, I feel your frustration.
