How can I make greek yogurt taste like the ones you get in fruit yogurt

The ones where you get a section of plain yogurt, and then the fruit (or granola) at the bottom/separated like oykos etc? It is apparently greek yogurt, but it’s not as sour as plain greek yogurt. I’ve tried sweetening with sugar, fruit etc but it still tastes like sour milk with a hint of sugar. When I buy them as fruit yogurts the yogurt has more of a milky/creamy taste.

I tried buying plain activia yogurt, thinking it would taste the same as their ‘delicious creamy’ ones but nope, still sour.

It would be so much cheaper if I could buy a big tub, and add my own berries/granola whatever but the taste is not as nice. It’s one of the only things I can stomach for breakfast.

Any ideas?

Another vote for Lidl Greek Yoghurt- it’s the best I’ve ever had!!

Fage 5% is delicious. It’s so creamy and much sweeter than the 0% version.

Just to point out the Lidl Greek style is not a proper strained Greek yoghurt, it has cream and probably some kind of thickener added to make it thick instead. But it is pretty creamy and lovely, even if I do usually try to eat the proper ones.

Proper Greek yoghurt (not “Greek style”) is what you need.

I buy it from Aldi and mix the 0% with the 10% in varying proportions depending on how virtuous I want to feel. The big supermarkets do similar ranges, and Fage is the branded variety. They are all in the squat pots, rather than the taller thinner ones.

It’s not sour at all and much nicer than the processed stuff you get in fruit corners.

Yes, yes. The difference between Greek and Greek Style is significant. I’m trying to wean myself off Greek in the interests of my budget but Greek Style tastes so much more sour so I find myself overcompensating with fruit and honey.

I sometimes add a teaspoon of jam to sweeten Greek style yoghurt. You don’t need much.

Lidl Greek yogurt is the nicest one I’ve had.
(interested to read it has added cream - I wondered why it was so good compared to all the other supermarket versions!)

I find if you mix it with water it makes it taste much smoother - although it becomes watery.

Have you tried Fage authentic Greek yogurt? It’s so sweet to me I can’t eat it.

Hmm

It's 3% sugar. The same as Warburton's Toastie.

You used to be able to buy tubs of just the Muller plain yogurt that's in fruit corners. Think it was called "velvet" or something, but I haven't seen it in ages.

Full fat Greek yogurt with evaporated milk mixed in is very close though.

PureBlackVoid · 26/08/2023 20:26

Thanks all. I haven’t paid too much attention to whether I get greek or greek style tbh so I will on next shop, to see if it makes a difference to the taste.

I’m not overly fussed about the sugar content of the ones I buy, I just prefer the less sour taste when it comes to having them for breakfast. But adding my own sugar/honey/other things to sweeten the plain ones doesn’t quite hit the mark.

The plain muller would be ideal! But quick google and it doesn’t bring up that it’s available in any of the shops I go to. I will try some of the other recommended brands next time and maybe mixing in some evap milk to see how it goes

This is it. Not sure if they still make it though.

Plain Fage has no added sugar or sweeteners. It’s just cultured milk.

Thisgooddog · 28/08/2023 09:27

The co op extra special full fat greek yoghurt is creamy and not sour.

PacificState · 28/08/2023 09:42

I accidentally made Muller yogurt by putting vanilla paste (the one that has vanilla plus sugar - not just vanilla essence) into Fage 10%. Took me ages to work out what it reminded me of, but it was a total dupe.
