Ground coffee

Hi,
What's the best way of making a single cup of coffee using ground? I currently have a coffee dripper and use filter papers, which is good, but I'd like the filtration rate to be slower as my coffee is slightly on the weak side. Don't want to change brands.

Are those filter pots with a plunger any better?
Thank you

DH has both but seems to have settled on the Aeropress.

Don't ask me though, I don't even like the smell of coffee Wink

the filter pots with a plunger might not be better, but you can adjust the brewing time and leave for longer for more flavour.

WiggelyWooWorm · 10/08/2023 10:05

If you are committed to what you have, you could try doubling up on filter papers, to slow down the flow.

I use one of these Insulated mug

But I don’t drink from it, I prefer a china cup.

Have you tried buying a stronger coffee?

You could make it stronger with a plunger, but only by adding more coffee I reckon.

If you don't want to get a countertop espresso machine, I recommend one of these thingies that boils it up from the bottom.

You can get one cup cafetières but it’s a bit of a faff.

Do you drink more than one cup a day? I tend to make a full cafetière in the morning and then for later in the day I reheat a cup in the microwave. This is probably coffee sacrilege though.

The strongest coffee I've had has been from a moka pot. I brew the same coffee (espresso beans from Lidl ground at home) in a cafetier as well as a moka pot every morning (I'm a coffeeholic!) and the difference in strength is remarkable.

Thank you everyone, yes I've thought about one of those Italian stove top devices. SiouxsieSiouxStiletto, I'm the complete opposite - the smell of coffee makes me so happy, I literally stick my nose in the pack every morning

I love V60 for filter coffee, like your current set up. I use James Hoffmann’s single cup method, which makes delicious coffee.

If you like your current process then maybe a Clever Dripper would produce a cup of coffee you prefer. It’s a combination of infusion (like a French press), but filtered so the brew isn’t as textured as a French press and so with a cleaner taste.

In terms of variables, I’m assuming you aren’t grinding your own coffee, as a finer grind would increase the extraction. Could you increase the dose of coffee?

@toastofthetown - thank you for that! I've disappeared down a James Hoffman rabbit hole and it's so entertaining.

That v60 video was fascinating!

You can brew in a cafetière for longer, but agree with PP who said to make sure you’re using the right kind of fine grind for a v60, which will increase the strength.

That YouTube video makes me reactionary and reach for a spoon of aldi instant. It would be too cold for me all that faff.
I use a nespresso each day as I have one in my bedroom to have two cups as soon as I get up but I do want tips for a good cup of coffee at weekends. I may get a plastic v60.
