Been buying free range eggs forever, started buying free range chicken about 18mths ago. I always buy british beef and lamb, but have also bought new zealand lamb.Am I being ethical and not adding to animal cruelty by buying new zealand lamb?i.e. when they are transported etc.

Also buy british pork, only recently I started to make sure it was british because of the stories you hear about the farming abroard. But when you buy bacon it always says danish is this adding to animal cruelty?

Also sausages, I buy 70% pork ones but how do I know where the meats coming from thats in them? I know I should go to the butchers more but sometimes for time reasons I do buy from the supermarket.

NZ lamb would not be transported here live. Same with Danish bacon.

Is that what you meant?

no idea - buy bacon with the british pork stamp on it if you're worried. I would imagine that (like here) some pigs live happier lives than others and it would be brand dependent.

There's a method of confining pregnant/suckling sows called stall and tether ('gestational crates' in the USA) that was banned in the UK in 1999.

Denmark's ban doesn't come into force until 2014.

Also, you might want to check where the meat is sourced. Pork reared elsewhere, when cured and packaged in the UK can become 'British' bacon.

Thanks girlfrommars and bubba, you just dont know what youre getting these days.

Its disgusting how all these other countries farm,Iv never heard of 'gestational crates' before.

On the packs of bacon etc they have an oval shaped symbol which inside says for example 'UK 1345 EC',does that mean its farmed elsewhere or is EC on there because we are in the EC?
