What age to let a child have peanuts?

I'm not talking actual peanuts here, more smooth peanut butter or satay sauces on food. My ds is three and it's not part of his diet. He has had it accidently once tho and was fine. So when did any of you let your kids? Just wondering if i'm being over protective.

I waited till 5, just to be on the safe side. I gave other nuts before then, but not peanuts or peanut products.

Thank you for answering.

Well, i have athsma. And the does run in the family along with eczema. but no nut alergies.

perhaps i should have posted on the alergies topic. i've let ds have things containing hazelnut, e.g. nuttella, and he was fine with that. Was hoping for a more opinions.

Hi, moving this thread to Allergies, hopefully more people will see it over there.

I think it totally depends on history of allergies in your family. my dds have had peanut butter at under a year, but we have no allergies, we've introduced it cautiously, and they are veggie children so it's a useful source of protein for us.

there are peanuts in so many bought foods - biscuits and cakes - that I suspect nearly all children are eating bits of peanut from a young age actually.
