Kohl rabi - ???????????

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 26/02/2008 12:49

I'm sorry, I really thought I knew a lot about food, but since having my veg boxes delivered these WEIRD things have been arriving. This week's 'weird thing' is a kohl rabi.

It looks like an alien!!!

What do I do with it?

I'm sure I'll be posting another question later this week when the new box arrives!

It has a flavour sort of between turnip and swede. You can cut of the sticky out bits, peel and dice and add to casseroles etc or look here for other ideas. HTH

Kohl rabi and courgette gratin

1 unpeeled Kohlrabi

8 oz courgettes trimmed

1 oz butter

1 can plum chopped tomatoes

2 tbsp finely chopped parsley

2 garlic cloves crushed

1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

½ tsp salt 1oz wholemeal breadcrumbs

Salt and pepper to season

Cut the kohlrabi and courgette into long thin slices. Steam kohlrabi for 15 minutes. Add the courgette but you must keep the two separate. Cook for a further 10 minutes or until both are tender.

Melt the butter over a low heat in a large pan, adding the tomatoes, parsley, garlic, cayenne pepper salt and black pepper. Simmer for a further 10 minutes, until the tomatoes have reduced to a fairly thick, dry paste. Preheat the oven to 180C 350f . Grease a round or oval gratin dish.

Drain the courgettes and kohlrabi slices and pat dry with a paper towel. Arrange alternate layers of kohlrabi and courgette. Spoon the tomato puree over the top and then sprinkle on the breadcrumbs. Put in oven and bake for20/30 minutes until the topping is lightly browned.

I'd put in double cream in stead of tomatoes, not entirely sure the acidity goes well with it.

Can't get em for love nor money over here

ComeOVeneer · 26/02/2008 12:59

Put a spoon on sugar into the tomato when cooking will soften the acidity. Never thought to do it with cream (not sure it goes with courgettes imo).

Would it go ok in a beef casserole?

ah, but she didn't ask for courgettes, did she, hmmmm?

ComeOVeneer · 26/02/2008 13:06

But the recipe is for kohlrabi and courgette gratin

Had the same problem when mine came and I googled and found this

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 28/02/2008 20:01

I diced it in the end and put it in a beef casserole. I was quite impressed with it!
