Tinned fruit - is it good?

pontipinemum · 24/07/2023 13:04

I want to try eating more fruit. But apart from expensive ones like strawberries/ raspberries fruit seems to come to my house to die so I hardly ever buy it.

I do however love tinned peaches/ pear/ mandarin - not in syrup in juice/ water which I don't drink.

Is it a good alternative? I eat a lot of tinned tomato/ various beans/ sweetcorn. I did buy banana's today and had one of those earlier. I am really good with veg (fresh and frozen) just not fruit

I have been buying value peaches in syrup and washing off the syrup; I’m hoping no one will tell me they’re super bad as they’re 1/3rd the price of the ones in juice (and hit the spot when I need something sweet)

PickledPuffin · 24/07/2023 13:11

The 'experts' say that tinned veg is just as good as fresh, so I don't see how tinned fruit is any different.
I adore tinned pineapple. I'm not likely to eat a whole fresh one, so it's tinned for me. Like you, I buy it in its natural juice, not syrup. Also, tinned pears, too. Yum!

CC4712 · 24/07/2023 13:11

I'm not a dietician, but anything tinned is heated to seal it. The food is therefore cooked to a degree and some nutrients are lost by heat (Vit C, B and multiple minerals). Even though the liquid in the tin isn't syrup, but might say 'juice' there will still be sugar in it. I would think frozen fruit would be healthier than tinned, and potentially retain more nutrients, if you cant eat fresh.

You should look at how you are storing things too and maybe plan a meal/dessert where you use the fruit the day you buy it. I only recently found out that putting strawberries in a sealed, plastic container can increase the life of them vastly. I have strawberries from 2 weeks ago that still look fresh!

I think that tinned fruit is perfectly fine. There are lots of different fruits, such as pineapple, mandarins, strawberries etc. I have never tried tinned strawberries, but I think that I will pick up a tin, next time I go to the supermarket.😁

Tinned fruit is fine.
I think washing off the juice is counterproductive, vitamins that have been lost in the canning process will be in that juice.
There is a lot of sugar in them, just like any other fruit, so it's a good idea to have them with meal.

Don't bother! Tinned strawberries are awful things, don't even taste anything like a fresh strawberry and as for the consistency yeuk! During the summer I freeze fresh strawberries pureed and use that 'sauce' for lots of things over the winter. I like tinned pears/peaches/pineapple and even the mixed fruit stuff, mandarins in fairness keep a long time when fresh so easy enough to buy fresh. I freeze excess pineapple when I open a tin as I like it on my pizza (shock/horror) and in curries so always have a bit in the freezer instead of under pressure to eat a full tin once opened.

Tinned pears are my favourite, better than fresh in my opinion as always ripe texture as such, can make a lovely crumble dessert too if you mix in a few frozen raspberries.

jannier · 24/07/2023 13:23

Frozen berries etc are good too

Voowoo · 24/07/2023 13:39

If any apples/pears/peaches look a bit sad and old lingering on the fruit bowl, they can be baked, with cinnamon and whipped cream drizzled on afterwards. Delicious. Or any old fruits turned into compote/coulis and saved for later. Air fryers can apparently make fruit crisps too.

I like tinned grapefruit. And I eat (defrosted) frozen berries mixed with yogurt every day.

pontipinemum · 24/07/2023 14:12

Sorry if my post was unclear, I will eat fresh strawberries/ raspberries I don't need anything to keep them longer in my house as they are gone quickly. I grew strawberries this summer and they were lovely. I did blend and freeze some 'bad' ones into ice cubes to add to DS's yoghurt etc over winter.

@LadyKenya I wouldn't buy tinned strawberries to eat as they are. They are soggy squishy things. I buy them to blend when making a cheesecake and they are perfect for that.

@CC4712 yes something was harping back at me from home ec in school saying the canning/ heat destroys a bit.

I am going to go with tinned fruit for a bit. I have gotten into a terrible habit of too much chocolate, a habit formed when DS was cluster feeding and it was close at hand/ ready to go! But that is no longer the case and I have a stone to lose.

I would avoid tinned mango. I tried it and it was horrible and I love fresh mango.

CurlewKate · 24/07/2023 14:19

Has anyone come on to say that fruit of any sort should only be eaten once a fortnight because of the sugar? 🤣

It's fruit juice. Of course it has sugar in it. All fruit has sugar in it. Confused

oldwhyno · 24/07/2023 14:32

Yes its good and a little bit of syrup won't hurt you either. Try them out and see which you like. Peaches, pineapple and lychees are favourites here.

CC4712 · 24/07/2023 14:43

@blacksax - Yes, of course fruit has sugar in it. I meant tinned fruit has more sugar compared to fresh-even if packed in 'juice'. eg tinned peaches have about 14g sugar per 100g, whereas a fresh peach is 8g of sugar.

Peony654 · 24/07/2023 14:45

My fruit never goes off? I only buy quantities I know we’ll eat, and usually keep in fridge. I only buy frozen berries. And I do get tinned pineapple and grapefruit as cheap and don’t have to prepare

gogomoto · 24/07/2023 15:04

Tinned fruit is fine, unlike fresh it is preserved close to source so actually can have similar nutritional value as fresh which have been in cold storage! Frozen can actually be better for you than fresh. Textures are different but if you like tinned go for it

gogomoto · 24/07/2023 15:05

@Apricotton

I actually like tinned mango

notapizzaeater · 24/07/2023 15:11

Tinned mango makes a fab mango sorbet or ice cream or milkshake

Georgyporky · 24/07/2023 18:07

I prefer frozen fruit to tinned. Texture can be different when defrosted, but if I'm mixing with yogurt it's not noticeable.
I've got blueberries, cherries & mango in the freezer at the mo - all very much cheaper than fresh & no chance of rotting

RedPanda2022 · 24/07/2023 20:42

Everything in moderation - I only get tinned in juice not syrup and drain it off but not obsessively. My boys will eat various fruits tinned they reject fresh (grrr)
-tinned peaches, fruit salad, pineapple, tropical mixes all hits here
-tinned pears with yoghurt/custard/baked into sponge pudding are yummy
never tried tinned apple or berries

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 24/07/2023 20:50

Yes tinned fruit in juice is still a healthy choice www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/are-tinned-fruit-and-vegetables-good-you

Aldi and Lidl do frozen strawberries and raspberries, not as good as fresh but better than tinned and in the middle price wise.

lljkk · 24/07/2023 20:59

I eat a lot of tinned fruit: plums, pears, peaches, apricots, mango. Am happy with all that.
