Is this an adequate breakfast?

My 1 year old DS has recently gone off breakfast sitting in his high chair - he normally has 2 weetabix or a bowl of porridge with a dash of honey. I've tried feeding him on my lap in the sitting room, but it seems to be the actual food he's not interested in.

I've tried all sorts of different breakfasts, and even done him a small cooked breakfast, but he just doesn't seem interested.

Whilst I was eating my toast yesterday morning, he wanted some, so I let him have a slice of wholemeal with a light buttering and he ate that all! I then followed it with a banana and that seemed to keep him happy.

So, my question is, is that an ok breakfast for a 1 year old? (He also has a 6oz bottle of milk) Toast and a banana? It seems to be either that or nothing at the moment!

I would say that that was fine

Perfectly ok! this is what dd2 has and she is 1 also. She is never that fussed for breakfast tbh....even for her morning bottle.

She usually has a little snack at around 10am and this keeps her going till lunch.

It sounds fine. He may have just gone off weetabix. You could try him on porridge.

You could maybe add a yoghurt to the toast and banana if he is interested.

He is getting to the stage that he wants to try whatever you are having which is great.

sounds fine to me. A lot of young chuildren don't like much breakfast especially if they have had a bottle or feed earlier on.

My year old chucks most of his around the room...

Great - thanks so much for such speedy responses!

I thought - I know this is a daft question to ask when I only have 1 slice of toast and a banana mself, just wanted reasurance! Ahh - the joys of being a first time mum

You could try mixing the weetabix with the banana?

DS2 goes through phases with his breakfasts. if he doesn't like weetabix, I often find he'll eat porridge, and vice versa.

But toast and banana sounds fine to me, especially with a milk drink.

Also, you might consider cutting the amount of milk you're giving him at breakfast - 6oz is quite a big bottle, so I guess that might be filling him up. As long as he's getting enough through the day, you could cut it to 3 or 4 oz?

That sounds fine.

My 1 year old is never that interested in breakfast. I think she fills up too much with milk, but hard to regulate as I bf him.

Have you tried giving him cereal he can pick up himself, that might keep him more interested.

I've tried all sorts - I did porridge with honey one day, weetabix with yoghurt the next, crushed up cornflakes, rice krispies, fruit salad etc etc etc.

Think you may be right with the milk though - how much should he be having in total at 15 months?

I think it's about a pint a day isn't it? But that would incldue anything you use in cooking/cereal as well as other dairy stuff like yogurt and cheese. Though I've never been quite sure how you are supposed to estimate cheese in fluid oz
