Russian Slice-can I use syrup instead of Jam?

I have a lot of leftover cake bits from various recent events and would like to try making a Russian slice, but I've no jam, and a lot of syrup sitting doing nothing (I don't really keep jam in the house). Might this work?

liquor-wise, I have a couple of flavoured gins, some (cheap, leftover from xmas cake!)whiskey, some vanilla vodka.. Not sure what else...

I have never made Russian Slice before either-is anyone a 'dab hand' 😊?
This is the basic recipe I think I'll follow.

The Russian slab cake is a bakery classic. We've pulled together a simple recipe so you can make your own Tipsy cake or Russian Cake at home.

I don't think you would get the firmness needed to cut into slices without the thickness of jam, it's the main binding ingredient in the recipe above, a little butter in it to firm it up but not much. What sort of syrup are you talking about? Sugar stock syrup, golden syrup, some other syrup?

I'd make trifle but then I love trifle! Cake pops are usually suggested for scrap cake but they are fiddly yokes to make and not worth the two bites you get.

Yes I did consider cake pops but I am not the neatest of people and I know my limits!
Okay. I have golden syrup, cane syrup and some cherry syrup (which I think is just cherry-infused cane syrup to be fair).

I think I'll play it safe and just go out and buy a jar of jam!
