Is this enough food for an 8yr old boy in one day?

DS1 and DS2 are with their Dad on Saturdays. Always hungry when they get home at 5!

Asked DS2 what he ate today.

Breakfast choc spread sandwich (one slice of bread).
Lunch 3 pieces of quiche.
Snack in town Dairy milk turkish delight bar.
Tea Rustlers microwave(yuk) burgers.

So do i need to have a word with xp to provide more food for him? (DS1 didn't have much more then that) DS2 said he askd for something else but Dad didn't let him have anything!

My ds is 8, today's food

Breakfast: 1 Ham Croussant, fruit and yogurt
snack: Fruit
Lunch: 1/3 large quiche, salad, 1 small ham chibatta.
Tea: 3 slices of bacon, 2 toast and beans, then chocolate cake.

I'd have a word, boys have a growth spurt at 8 so need more food. My ex gave my ds 2 doughnuts for lunch when he took him out last week so yours isn't that bad.

DontDreamItBeIt · 23/02/2008 22:39

Definitely not enough if he says he is still hungry, he's old enough to know!

DD1 is 8 and had a huge bowl of porridge fo breakfast, cheese sandwich for lunch (only one slie of bread as she didn't like it)
Steak pie and veg for te.
She was still hngry and ate three weetabix before bed.

I'd definitely ask hm to give more, particularly if they are asking for food.

gigglewitch · 23/02/2008 22:42

err, as you asked, no I don't think that's enough. my 7yo DS1 would want fruit and snacks during the morning and eats 2 slices of toast and a muesli bar for b'fast to start with!!
never heard of the {yuk} burgers but would think they need a proper meal in the evening rather than two sort of snack ones?

Do I take it you are out at work or something? I am also out for most of the day on saturdays, but being the control freaky person i am I tend to leave lunch prepared (usually just sandwiches and yogurt) and snacks to take out [or eat if they're in,obv] and my DC will happily eat the contents of the fruit bowl and half a pound of raisins each .
I must add before you think they're too good to be true that they are dairy free and have other allergies so fruit - fresh or dried - is the main snack food in our house

tortoise · 23/02/2008 22:44

Thanks.
He eats a fair bit more than that at home with me.
Will have a word with xp.Although it willprobably go in one ear and out the other! Surprised his mother doesn't step in. She does everything else! (He lives at his parents!)

Today my DD (8) has had

Cornflakes, sliced banana and skimmed milk for brekkie

2 squares of homemade fudge to give her energy/incentive to muck out

Tortilla/frittata and salad followed by
mango and blueberries for lunch

2 chicken balls in batter, some noodles and stir fried veg followed by tangerine

I don't think it is enough food for 8 yr old DS, especially if he is asking for more.

I wasn't going to mention the lack of fruit/veg as I'm sure you fill him full of good things whilst he is with you.

colditz · 23/02/2008 22:55

My 4 year old has had
1 banana
2 rounds of ham sandwiches
1 bag of crisps
1 chocolate biscuit
1 apple
Fishfingers, chips, beans and carrots
1 bowl rice pudding
2 strawberry laces
2 rice cakes
some cheese

(gosh, that's crappy!)

so no, I don't think that's enough for an 8 year old.

gigglewitch · 23/02/2008 22:56

get it.

plan A - tell him to feed them more (and yes if his mother is around, tell her too)
plan B - tell him what to feed them
plan C - packed lunches... [Grrrrr]

colditz · 23/02/2008 22:56

talk to his mother then, don't bother if you think he won't listen. Use the phrase "So upset, he was so hungry!"

My son is 8
Actually, today he had less than that.

I would say the quiche is quite filling. Maybe he wasn't having a "hungry" day. My ds's food intake varies enormously.

Won't list what he had, as it was quite crap today

Dragonhart · 26/02/2008 12:24

My ds1 is 2 1/2 and he eats more than that in a day and my dd2, 13months would prob eat a little more (obviously in volume rather than similar stuff- I wouldnt eat those burgers myself let alone give them to my kids!- as you said- yuck!)

Do they eat less as they get older

Actually, I am quite supprised that if he is living with his mum that she lets them eat that. I know my MIL couldnt help but cook them a proper meal.

carmenelectra · 26/02/2008 12:34

My ds aged 8 eats a lot.

Today he had cornflakes, 2x toast and butter, a yogurt and a smoothie before school. He has a school lunch and pudding(which he says is titchy!)

bag of grapes for tuck

Tonight he has a braising steak casserole type thingy with mash and he will have pudding(usually yogurt)

Biscuit and milk before before bed

Full day yesterday was 2x Weetabix for brekky, juice and 2xbacon and ix scrambled egg

Chilli at school for lunch(which he doesnt eat at home!), gingerbread man after i think?

Half chicken sandwich after school and crisps

For dinner he had pasta, pesto. cheese, ciabatta, salami, parma ham. Choc cupcake for afters.

Biscuit and strawberry milk before bed.

Yours doesnt sound much to me, but they are all different, arent they?

tortoise · 26/02/2008 21:33

Oh no i can't talk to his mother! lol!

They never eat fruit there.
His Mum does sometimes do them a meal.

Dragonhart Wishful thinking there! They eat loads more as they get older. Both my DS's are always asking for food! Their Dad just can't be bothered to try and cook for them!

It sounds not too bad really. You've got all the food groups in there bar fruit and veg. But the key thing is that your boys says they are still hungry. Tell them to nag on at their dad for more food. An 8 year old should be getting pretty good at nagging
