Snacks for Hangry Teens please!

14 and 16yo DCs get in from school, hoover up crisps, chocolate bars, sausage rolls, pre-packed fruit such as watermelon and pomegranate seeds, biscuits and STILL complain that there’s no food in the house.
I have to hide food and phase it into the public sphere otherwise it just disappears and my food budget is at breaking point!

Anyone got some ideas for filling, healthy snacks that don’t cost the earth?

Homemade flapjacks (some good recipes with oats/butter/syrup)

Quesadillas

houmous and crudites

crackers and cheese

BaconAndAvocado · 22/06/2023 11:12

Thanks siblingrevelryagain
So to be thick but what’s a quesadilla? Is it a wrap?

I roast a chicken at the beginning of each week and they have free access to that and a couple of blocks of cheddar. The initial expense seems high but not compared to the endless snacks and it's much healthier & more filling. Sometimes they have it by itself but usually they get some bread or a wrap and make some form of sandwich.

BaconAndAvocado · 22/06/2023 11:15

nobodygoesdowninthejungle Interesting idea.
I’m guessing you carve up the meat, ready for them?

Crunpets
Noodles (value supermarket version)
Eggs
Peanut butter on toast
Yogurt with granola
Overnight oats

Dc3 loves cheese, popcorn, milkshake, melon and bananas.
Dc2 likes cream crackers with hummus or butter, chicken, rice cakes and pineapple.

DiscoBeat · 22/06/2023 11:21

Porridge oats are your friend! Mine like protein balls made from them, flapjacks, or even just a bowl of porridge!
DS15 makes a sort of pancake - he whips up a couple of eggs and pours them into a little butter is s frying pan, puts a tortilla wrap over the top, then grated cheese and ham on top. Folds it over while it cooks, then flip it and cook the other side and to heat it through.

Great idea! We always have plans for cooked chicken but I like the idea of cooking one that they can help themselves to!

BansheeofInisherin · 22/06/2023 11:22

We are veggie, so tailor to your needs:
Falafel with veggies and halloumi in a wrap.
Massive toasties with tomato and cheese
Quesadillas stuffed with mushrooms, sweet corn, peppers
Stirfried noodles with tofu and veggies
Baked potato
Filled pasta with a handful of peas tossed in

DiscoBeat · 22/06/2023 11:23

Seeing crumpets mentioned reminds me - my nephew cooks them under the grill with marmite and grated cheese on top, which falls through the holes.
Damn this thread, I'm on 16:8 so not eating till lunch time!

TheHighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 22/06/2023 11:24

Similar to @nobodygoesdowninthejungle ,
I often have cooked chicken in the fridge
I (or dc) also bake a cake a couple of times a week.

Wraps with chicken and salad quite often
Eggs on toast
Beans in toast
Cheese toast
Toasted sandwiches
Noodles with some veg and chicken thrown in
Omelettes

Correction - he flips it first THEN fills it.

Crumpets are a great idea....marmite, cheese, jam.

I’m just fed up of them moaning, “There’s nothing to eat in this house!”

Whatever happened to breakfast, lunch and dinner???

OP posts:
BaconAndAvocado · 22/06/2023 11:27

I’m trying to avoid any actual cooking/mess making as I work from home, finishing just before dinner time.
I don’t want to be faced with chaos.

When mine were teens I used to cook a 'fridge chicken'/ Just roast a chicken and stick it in the fridge for them to attack.. they'd make massive chicken sandwiches and still be hungry for dinner an hour later. But at least it was reasonably healthy. And actually not too expensive. A £5 chicken lasted 2-3 days as snacks for them and lunch for me.

BaconAndAvocado · 22/06/2023 11:28

Oops didn’t finish that sentence....
I don’t want to be faced with chaos before I have to start cooking the dinner.

Another good one is banana and peanut butter milkshakes or peanut butter bagels. Both filling. But milkshakes do make a bit of mess.

BansheeofInisherin · 22/06/2023 11:30

Yes, I bought DS a dinky little milkshake maker, and he uses it daily. I think it was the Breville one. Puts in yoghurt, fruit, peanut butter.

FlyingUnicornWings · 22/06/2023 11:31

Protien balls made from peanut butter & oats!

Just don't mix them up with fat balls 😂

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 22/06/2023 12:06

I feel your pain. I have a 14 year old and an 18 year old who both remind me of the hungry caterpillar! Favourites here are:

Ryvita thins and sour cream dip
Packet noodles - I order weird and wonderful flavours online in bulk!
Cheese toasties
Quesadillas (I don't think anyone answered your question but it's basically a tortilla in a frying pan topped with cheese and things like salami, chorizo, chicken, veggies. Then another tortilla on top and flipped until it's all golden and tasty)
Cheese and crackers
Cereal
Peanut butter protein bars
Plain pasta (my DD, very strange)
And last but not least MY keto coconut ice cream!!!! Even though there's 6 cornettos in the freezer!

Imagine!! 😆

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 22/06/2023 12:23

They need to start with something savoury otherwise the sugar they eat just leads to more hunger so more food etc.

So I'd have them start with something like this and then they can continue onto the crappy snacks afterwards (and will probably eat less of them):

Cheese sandwich in decent bread

Humous/guacamole with pitta and crudites (have veg sticks ready chopped in fridge)

Cheese, wholegrain crackers, chutney

Peanut butter / mashed avocado on wholegrain toast

Fried egg sandwich

Milkshake made with milk, greek yoghurt, banana and vanilla

Chicken drumsticks

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 22/06/2023 12:28

I roast a chicken or ham (whatever is reduced on a Monday morning).
I also have a bread maker and make a loaf if they’ve friends coming round.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 22/06/2023 12:30

Cooked sausages is another one. A pack cooked and in a Tupperware. They can either quickly cook them or have them cold.
