Cutting down on cheese

Suggestions please on easy but healthy food choices because I am eating way too much cheese and getting slightly elevated fatty liver markers although I am almost teetotal. Cheeses is just such an easy protein form so a chunk of cheese with an apple or cheese on Ryvita with beetroot, makes a fabulous snack. If I have to cut down on cheese/butter please give me your healthy, go to lunch/snack options? I am assuming replacing cheese with nuts would give me the same high-fat problem for my fatty liver?

Are you vegetarian?

Eggs are a great option - hard boiled can replace the chunk of cheese for lunch with an apple/beetroot.

Hummus or other bean dips are easy with Ryvita, or a good 3-bean salad?

Roast some veg and add to cous cous, easy and satisfying.

If you’re not vegetarian then chicken, or smoked mackerel is good.

I developed an intolerance to dairy ( nasty eczema reaction) so can’t have cheese and agree it’s such a useful (as well as delicious, sob) food. Hummus is very helpful, especially with Marmite, as that supplies that salty umami hit. Would cottage cheese be ok for you ?

Fake cheeses are not massively successful, taste wise, IMO, though the Cathedral City plant based version is excellent - not sure how that would rate on the fat scale

Thank you all for such really helpful and tasty suggestions. I am not vegetarian, but the egg option is still a great one. The problem there is I tend to eat eggs for breakfast. I may reconsider the breakfast choices and then I could use a hard-boiled eggs for lunch or snacks. The cottage cheese idea is tempting as well…..hummus too. Mackerel is one I had not thought of either. Brilliant…. thank you…

Thanks for this thread, I need to cut down on cheese too, the only thing I can add is tinned fish, tinned sardines are lovely

If you have a fatty liver you would be better off cutting down on sugar and carbs.

You need less when eating stronger tasting cheeses, so maybe lean towards a few cubes of feta, shaved parmesan on food etc rather than cheddar and the like?

Also as we all know it's easy to eat loads of melted cheese, so maybe try to eat it cold and don't eg add it into sauces and soups.

Also light babybel are really nice, and don't taste significantly different to the full fat kind.

The advice I got about fatty liver is to reduced processed food such as white carbs and sugar and to eat in moderation extra virgin olive oil, unsalted nuts. oily fish.
Did they not give you feedback on what your diet should be like?
If I were you I would just cut this snacking habit and aim for 3 solid meals, ideally reduced to two or once a day of veg, lean protein and healthy fat.

I just stopped buying cheese for a while

DD wasn't happy so had buy in some cheddar for her

And now every 3 weeks or so I add my favourite Pie D'angloys cheese. Half of which I've already eaten since it was delivered yesterday.

Try mixing some pulses with blanched green beans plus something like olives for taste. It will keep in the fridge for days, just have a small bowl as a snack or with a meal.

Presumably you have also had your HbA1c checked.
Fatty liver is usually caused insulin resistance.

I agree with the advice to buy strong cheese like Parmesan or a blue cheese so you get the flavour but only need a small amount.

For things to snack on instead, i ve just had some amazing beef tomatoes on riveta. They are so fresh at the moment that you can just slice them, put them on the riveta and drizzle with balsamic vinegar, plenty of cracked black pepper and sea salt. They also make delicious bruschetta. You would probably also be ok with a low fat cream cheese with smoked salmon and dill.
Fritata is good for snacking, just make a big one and keep in the fridge. Anything goes in them really, bacon and mushroom, roasted Mediterranean veg or tender stem broccoli, asparagus and peas.

I also sometimes make some baked, sweet potato falafel which make a filling, healthy snack.

Hummous - reduced fat, pepped up with some chilli and cumin, is great on ryvita.

You could make a big pan of soup - red lentil and root veg or carrot and ginger and freeze extra portions. Have it with crusty bread or toast dipped into it so they need no toppings.

worldwidetravel2017 · 10/12/2023 13:14

Asda chicken noodle soup is low fat
