Hi there!
I would like to start making my own yogurt at home. My baby loves yogurt and I can't find healthy lactose-free options in the market. Any recommendations for a good yogurt maker? Many thanks!

I have this one from Lakeland. Start with a small carton of natural yogurt and stir in a litre of UHT milk. Takes 6 hours on 37 degrees if the milk is room temp although it's supposed to take longer on a higher temperature. I used to strain it for Greek style yogurt, but I don't bother now. Needs to cool and chill in fridge, but you have a litre of yogurt ready next day. I half fill Weck jars and keep them in the fridge, so that I can stir in fruit and granola.

I make my own yoghurt in my slow cooker. Got the recipe from BBC Good Food website I think. Basically, put 2 litres milk in slow cooker on high for about 2 and a half hours. Check and when temperature is at 82 C, switch off. Wait until temperature drops to 43 degrees C (can be hastened by putting crock pot in sink of water). Scoop out a mugful of milk and mix with 100ml live yoghurt. Stir back into the warm milk. Wrap the whole slow cooker in a towel and leave at least 8 hours. Makes lovely thick yoghurt. A yoghurt maker may be easier though, no temperature checking I imagine. But if you already have a slow cooker the above may save you buying another gadget.

Many thanks, @Bitteralmond and @Cynderella for your useful insights!!! Unfortunately, I don't have a slow cooker but I might get one in the future. Good idea.

I make mine in my Instant Pot. I would buy a gadget that is multipurpose rather than limited to one job.

I used to make mine in the Instant Pot, you can use fresh milk but that requires a bit more work ie cooling the milk after the initial heat up or use UHT which is much easier. Plus the IP has a lot of other uses for example cooking chicken breast from frozen as a pressure cooker and it has a slow cooker feature too.

When I made it frequently I put the le creuset pot I’d heated the milk and yoghurt culture in under the switched-on oven light overnight. No oven heat, just the electric light.

I’ve been using this regularly for a couple of years and it’s good - it was £16 when I bought it July 2021 though!

I did this for years when we had an immersion heater. Just whisked up culture and milk in a bowl, covered it and put in airing cupboard overnight. Next morning - yogurt.

Combi boiler now.

I've the same as @Cynderella , it's excellent and has been used weekly for years now.

If you are new to yoghurt do give uht milk a go. It tastes much better than it used to! No messing, just 2 tbs yoghurt and a room temp carton of uht and you're done.
