I'm about to get a big frost free freezer to replace our old frosted up and tiny one...what shall I put in all the extra space?

What are you fave things to have in your freezer?

I make ice cream, no churn simple ice cream and bread which I make into rolls or bagels & freeze

make slow cooker favourites for a week and freeze half for the last week of the month - saves a fortune on cooking, ingredients & time

Findyourneutralspace · 29/05/2023 16:09

Oh, I’d batch cook to my heart’s content if I had a bigger freezer. And I’d always have a bag of ice for my cold drinks.

Blip · 29/05/2023 16:17

Yes! Yes!
I can have ice cubes!
And more batch cooked meals
And make my own ice cream
I cannot wait!
Any more?

Do you want recipe for easy vanilla ice cream?

maslinpan · 29/05/2023 16:41

I always have wraps and falafels in my freezer so there's always a quick lunch. Also dhal, frozen ginger, egg whites and soup.

Blip · 29/05/2023 16:45

Brilliant ideas, dhal with every curry now and no more chucking the eg whites after I make carbonara.
@OttoGraph that would be great, thank you so much!

And stock!!!!! I can keep homemade stock in the freezer!

Frozen onion, soffrito mix, shallots - really speeds up meal prep time in the evenings, can buy ready frozen or freeze your own
Frozen mashed potatoes (I buy the tubs of luxury mash when on yellow sticker and freeze, can be a little watery but microwave for the last minute with lid off and stir in some butter)
Batch cook home favourites - shepherds pie, bolognese, chilli, lasagne etc
Also chocolate brownies, always make a big batch and freeze half, defrost and warm slightly, lush

Blip · 29/05/2023 16:59

Ooh I didn't know you could freeze brownies, that's amazing news

Definitely as much of your own batch cooking as you can bring yourself to do - nothing beats getting home tired and realising past you made current you a lovely meal.

Frozen parathas or rotis from the Indian food bit of the freezer section.

Raspberries or mixed berries for adding to things without having to risk mouldy berries guilt. (Also cheaper and probably better for the planet out of season.)

Frozen chopped spinach is also pretty good for chucking in stuff when you've got no fresh veggies in, frozen peas too. Avoid broccoli/cauliflower, the freezing process makes it mushy.

I chuck bananas in when they are past their best then make banana loaf with them . Need new ideas thou , I shouldn't have bought such a big freezer I have loads of space all the time

We have one drawer with emergency bread & milk in
Another dedicated to ice cream
One with beige food
One with yellow stickered meat & fish
Two of batch cooked meals, some as family sized portions, some as two person portions and some as individual portions.

Hard cheeses and butter freeze ok.

I often hoover up the stickered discounted bargains - mainly meat and fish. Saves a fortune.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/05/2023 18:38

Frozen mirepoix/soffrito/vegetable base mix. Just grab handfuls from the freezer to start all sorts of recipes.

Grated cheese - makes so much sense once you have it handy!

I keep both sweet and savoury crumble mixes bagged up and ready to go as well, brilliant for using up leftovers and can be used from frozen.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 29/05/2023 19:20

Breadcrumbs- I blitz up loads in the food processor and then pop them in the freezer, so handy for topping a pasta bake or topping fillets of fish.

If you're looking forward to the ice for your drinks also freeze slices of lemon and lime. (Freeze flat on a baking tray so they don't clump together then transfer to a bag once frozen).

I keep bread products in the freezer, we don't use a lot of sliced bread and a loaf usually goes off in the cupboard, so we keep it in the freezer and just chuck a slice straight in the toaster when we want it.

Cookie dough. Make loads and then take out and bake when needed.

Crumble topping - makes for the quickest pudding ever.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 29/05/2023 19:21

And pesto. Again I make loads and then freeze in an ice cube tray so I can just pop out a couple of cubes as needed.

maslinpan · 29/05/2023 19:50

I put pieces of tray bake in there, most cakes freeze perfectly and it's got me out of many a packed lunch panic when I can defrost something sweet the night before.

I think my new freezer is gonna be pretty full!
V grateful for all these great suggestions.
Thank you all.

I did not know you could freeze them for banana bread!

Georgyporky · 30/05/2023 19:10

I make a big batch of caramelised onions, & freeze in small/medium pots.
No need to freeze breadcrumbs & waste freezer space. Put them on baking trays in the receding heat of the oven, turn a bit, then when cool store in a tupperware box at ambient temperature.

caringcarer · 30/05/2023 19:40

I have 2 cooking apple trees in my garden so I freeze peeled and sliced apple slices. I also grow rhubarb so cut this up and freeze too.
