My mum had a Good Housekeeping one as a wedding pressie (1971) and I have a 1990's version. The main difference is that I have imperial AND metric measurements! I use it time and time and time again - far more than any other cookery book I have.

the 'Leiths ... bible' series are fantastic. We use Leiths Vegetarian Bible almost every day. it is organised by ingredient type so for example if you have a lot of carrots you just go to the carrot pages and pick a recipe!
I also have the seafood one, if you search 'leiths' on amazon there are at least ten different ones in the series.

That might be a good one, thanks. Borrowed a cake decoration book from the library the other day and it was a good housekeeping one and it is very good!

I used Antonio Carluccio's Vegetables to make dinner tonight (potato gnocchi) so that's today's favourite. I also really like the first Moro cookbook.

Depends so much on what sort you are looking for - for a beginner, or experienced cook, a compendium, or something specific....

I love Nigella Lawson's "How to Eat" - it's a written in a good coversational style, and also "Silver Spoon" which is the classic complete Italian cookbook. I've given both of these as presents. Other ones I love, bit more unusual, are "Honey from a Weed" and "1080" which is a complete Spanish cookbook.

JulesJules · 19/02/2008 19:34

Oh and I love the first Moro cookbook too!

Which Good Housekeeping book do people recommend, I can see a couple on Amazon? I want basic meals plus easy baking etc..

I have to admit to liking Jamie. Can't help it.

Marguerite Patten's Every Day Cook Book. It's got everything in it and I use it at least twice a week. It's amazing

McDreamylove · 20/02/2008 15:50

Any of the Australian Women's weekly recipe books - well used in our house.

joyfulspike · 20/02/2008 19:06

Mine is the cooks classic companion,
this seems to be the most recent version on Amazon

or you could try abebooks

Scootergrrrl · 20/02/2008 19:14

Nigel Slater - The Kitchen Diaries is really good, both for recipes and reading.

pickie · 20/02/2008 19:39

Mine is The dairy book of home cookery. That is a fab book and so many good recipes in.

chiefcookandbottlewasher · 21/02/2008 11:04

good choice pickie! i reccommend the red cabbage with red wine and thyme and the tomato and red pepper soup. The lemon and poppy-seed loaf is gorgeous but make double quantities cos there's never enough of it!

pickie · 21/02/2008 18:50

thanks chief, cant wait till Sunday! lemon and poppy seed sounds delicious!
